So this #DCBlackout stuff? NOT LEGIT. Tweets went around claiming that because of the #GeorgeFloydProtests, all cell service was blocked and no one could get into contact with the protestors. But this has been debunked!
There’s a lot of conflicting information going around. Some people are claiming it was faked, others are saying they witnessed it. This photo was shared around frequently, claiming to be a pic of DC right before this happened.
One of the photos that was going around, looked similar to the photo above but was actually a screengrab from the ABC Show Designated Survivor. Make sure you do a reverse image search of photos before you share them, especially as news is quickly unfolding.
People claiming to be from DC and others continued to post worries about what was happening on the ground. However, several news outlets -- including @DCist, a local DC paper -- confirmed that all was okay. dcist.com/story/20/06/01…
@hunterw, a White House correspondent for Yahoo News, tweeted videos throughout the night of what it looked like on the ground, debunking some of the claims that people were being held hostage or cut off.
A lot of the tweets that were being spread, both from those confirming and denying this, looked suspiciously like bot tweets. Remember -- only share information from reliable sources, like these journalists and organizations.
@EenaRuffini assured people that sometimes, people just need to go to bed and that all was well.
So it looks like #DCBlackout is not legit. Remember to wait as breaking stories are unfolding, and wait for reputable sources to confirm or deny these claims. This is a chaotic time, but we all still need to be responsible with the information we share. #ThinkBeforeYouShare
