1/ New paper! @mathewkiang and I take a look at the statements issued by top 50 medical school deans following George Floyd's killing and the subsequent unrest.
2/ We were inspired to undertake this analysis after one of us read a statement issued by an academic medical center that was framed as though #GeorgeFloyd somehow spontaneously died of unknown causes. He did not. The cause was known. The cause of causes is also known.
3/ Floyd was killed by a @MinneapolisPD officer who knelt on his neck for 7 minutes and 46 seconds while he was handcuffed, lying prone, pleading for his life, and calling out for his mother. The #GeorgeFloydProtests are still going on. DON'T STOP ✊

Will this trial be bigger than O.J.?

Defense lawyers argued for opening up TELEVISED hearings, saying public officials including Gov. #TimWalz & @MayorFrey have made public statements that could sway a jury.
@HennepinCounty Judge #PeterCahill set a a hearing this 9/11 (how romantic), & a trial in March 2021 for the 4 former police officers charged in the "killing of George Floyd."

On 9/11 he will hear pleadings for certain matters e.g potential change of venue for the trial of "videotaped killing that has sparked protests and calls for racial justice across the country." #blacklivesmatter #BLMriots #GeorgeFloydProtests

Meet Tom Weeks of Bellingham WA and owner of "Weeks Custom Carpentry." Two days ago he tried to drive through protestors at a #BLMprotest in the city.
According to witnesses, he drove towards the crowd and continued to drive into the demo. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
Tom Weeks wasn't done though. He posted a self-serving and false narrative about the incident that certainly make it seem as if his presence at the rally wasn't an accident.

1/5 Steven Carrillo ambushed & killed Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, critically injured another deputy, & threw pipe bombs at police June 6th.

He also scrawled extremist mottos "Boog", "I became unreasonable", & "stop the duopoly" in BLOOD on the hood of a car.…

"Boog" refers to a growing far right white supremacist "boogaloo" movement to start a civil war based on race.… via @mercnews

1/ The powerful #GeorgeFloydProtests are *already changing* how cities are thinking about policing all across the country. This thread lists what #BlackLivesMatter and the protests have already achieved since late May. Please let me know if I've missed anything.

1) Breaking: #AlQaeda Central, aiming for resurgence, seeks to compete with #ISIS' media in new issue of "One Ummah" magazine in English. The issue gives timely mention of America's current tumult: #COVID19, #GeorgeFloydProtests, political & economic turmoil, and more.
2) This new issue comes just weeks after last issue of AQ's One Ummah, released May 22 in Arabic. Like this new issue, May's One Ummah made timely reference to FBI investigation of Pensacola attack. Today's issue reinforces this fast production capability.
3) Capitalizing on racial inequity protests throughout the US, #AlQaeda picked up its long-running thread on racism towards blacks, promoting Malcolm X & disparaging Dems & Reps like. Blames Biden, Pelosi, Clintons, McConnell, Trump & others for injustice.…

I'm calling on @MayorJenny to de-militarize police; restrict use of excessive or deadly force; increase accountability in police union contracts; give subpoena powers to independent oversight boards; redirect PD $ to community-based alternatives. #blacklivesmatter #georgefloyd
I asked the Mayor directly in a meeting with legislators last week about the violence being instigated by the police, and her response to me was dismissive. Now I am asking her publicly through this letter to take action. #blacklivesmatter #georgefloyd
If the Mayor fails to respond adequately to this public request, I will be joining the chorus of voices calling on her to resign. #blacklivesmatter #georgefloydprotests

Dispatches from the Prairies.
A thread
1/ A little over a week ago, I tweeted some of my experiences as a Black woman on the Prairies. I have been Black on the Prairies for 20 years. Here, blackness is considered foreign, an oddity in the landscape, at best a question mark.
Although the black presence dates from more than a 100 years ago, with the first black pioneers migrating from the U.S. in search of a better life, Black bodies, Black histories, Black Life, Black experiences are mostly unaccounted for here.
Simply put, blackness is often marked with silence and absence from the public discourse. So, it has been quite a few couple of weeks to see hundreds of Black people from across the province along with people from other communities on the streets chanting #BlackLivesMatter

@socialstudiestx We talked during the meeting on Friday about compiling resources for educators who want to transform education as a result of the international movement for equity happening now.

There are resources under #Ourstory. Other materials are available through #CovidTeaching.

A thread on #PoliceFreeSchools.

Every parent or educator who has ever said the words, “#BlckLivesMatter” should work to get cops out of schools.

This school year has many cases cops harming kids: 1) a cop assaulted a girl for taking an extra milk.…
In Florida this school year, a cop traumatized a 6-year-old girl when he handcuffed, arrested, & forced her into his squad car.

Then he took her to the youth jail, took her mug shot & fingerprinted her, all for a temper tantrum.

In Chicago this school year, police punched a girl and threw her down stairs in her school. Then lied about doing it. The video revealed the truth.

Hundreds gathered now for a day of #GeorgeFloydProtests here at Black Lives Matter Plaza, formerly 16th Street.

The tone is upbeat. Food, music, limited police presence.

It’s hard to imagine this was a battlefield less than a week ago.
The AFL-CIO, whose first floor was burned down by protesters 6 days ago, now has calls for “criminal justice reform now” and a single armed guard from “Security Assistance Management Inc” at the front door.
Tables offering free snacks, water, and medical help line the streets.

For all Trump’s talk of anarchy, I want to point out: for actual self-avowed anarchist socialists, this is more what Anarcho-socialism looks like than bricks and Molotov cocktails.

"This is not a singular cry of protest. As we continue the investigation of the anti-press complaints, we intend to pursue justice for journalists who were attacked or unjustly detained."

.@GayleKing found this video heartwarming. Perhaps it is. I for one, see it as a possibility that there have been white racist provocateurs in the #GeorgeFloydProtests
they are a noxious lot that @CBSNews hasn't examine sufficiently…

Notable that @SecArmy senses need to speak out now about sworn oath to Constitution and respecting right of assembly.

This is why I asked the top military justice expert to write about matters including duty to disobey illegal orders from a POTUS....

"If the president were to issue a clearly unlawful order, military personnel would be obliged to refuse. And if they failed to refuse an unlawful order, they could be prosecuted for any conduct that violated the UCMJ."…

McCraven wrote a powerful statement last year in his Op-ed and CNN interview with @jaketapper.

But he has not spoken out now on Trump response to #GeorgeFloydProtests #BLMprotest.

1/ America has 393 million firearms in civilian hands, firearms which can transform disagreements into fatalities

So far, we had at least 62 instances of gun violence at the #GeorgeFloydProtests and 15 people died

(They were killed by civilian agitators, not law enforcement)
2/ We're tracking gun incidents at the #GeorgeFloydProtests and found multiple instances of:

- ppl brandishing firearms & pointing guns at protesters

- ppl bringing stockpiles of firearms to protests (found examples of MAGA folks & others doing this)

- ppl firing at police
- several instances of business owners using firearms to stop looters

- several instances of people driving by in cars and pointing their firearms at protesters

You can see all the data here:…

Don't let this get lost in all the autocratic shock & awe: America's own "little green men" w/o insignias—a la Russia's troops who seized Crimea.

NPR reports Bill Barr (who ordered attack on protesters) deploying "riot teams" from Bureau of Prisons. Prison guards on US streets.
Bill Barr’s special forces/prison guards are boosting their numbers in Washington DC… for a vigil led by clergy. These mercenary-like troops under DOJ Bureau of Prisons jurisdiction are from Texas. Who flew them to DC & who paid for it? @aletweetsnews
😱What could possibly go wrong? Armed prison guards—already trained to view Black people as criminals—overseeing protesters protesting Black people being treated as criminals? #BlackLivesMatter #GeorgeFloydProtests #AmericanSpring

A #COVID19 plague, uprisings, unemployment -- yet stocks are soaring.
The S&P 500, Tues at highest level in 3 mos.
Nasdaq is up 40% since Mar23.
The Dow jumped 400+ pts today.
"The market is broken. It no longer reflects a forward outlook..."

"...that is truly aligned in the real economy. The public will say these markets are rigged."
2 reasons for stock soars:
- $trillions in stimulus from the Fed
- investors expecting monster returns once the economy recovers. from #COVID19.
Though >105,000 Americans have died of #COVID19 the markets think a #vaccine is around the corner, & the US epidemic is waning - pop the champagne.🍾
Banks are happy because historic job losses haven't left them holding $billions in unpaid mortgages. Bizarre disconnect.

“Deadly Exchange”, a vile campaign being heavily promoted on & off 🇺🇸 campuses by virulently anti-#Israel orgs & activists, traffics in ugly #antisemitic tropes & canards.

The “Deadly Exchange” propaganda campaign maintains that US policing problems, incl. wrongful deaths by US cops on the beat, are the result of the 1-2 week police 👮‍♀️ counter-terror seminars that American-Jewish orgs host in #Israel for high-level 🇺🇸 law enforcement officials. 2/

George Junius Stinney, Jr. of African descent was the youngest person to be sentenced to death in the 20th century in the United States.
He was only 14 years old when he was executed in an electric chair.
During his trial, even on the day of his execution,
he always carried a Bible in his hands, claiming to be innocent.
He was accused of killing two white girls, 11-Year-old Betty, and Mary of 7, the bodies were found near the house where the teenager resided with his parents.
At that time, all members of the jury were white.
The trial lasted only 2 hours, and the sentence was dictated 10 minutes later.
The Boy's parents were threatened, and prevented from being present in the courtroom, and subsequently expelled from that city.
Before the execution, George spent 81 days in prison without being able
