On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas with the news slavery has ended and the slaves were free.

We celebrate this day as a community because it sparked one of the biggest changes to the lives of ALL Americans. Finally, black people across the Country were free. Though the changes were not immediate, and we still fight for equal rights, it was the first true beginning.
It led us to the right to vote, the right to a full education, and the right to marry who we love.
Today, we celebrate. This is a day of reflection, education and solidarity. We educate our children and show them why we have hope. Hope for unity.

My family roots in America go back over 350 years. I have ancestors who were slaves. I reflect on this day humbled by how I am blessed to live in this time with perseverance, and to continue the legacy of change.
We cannot forget our history, we remember it and we grow from it.
This is a day of reflection and education. Let's celebrate the greatness that we have this ability. Enjoy a great meal, laugh with friends and family however you can, and be humbled by our beginnings and strive for a better future for all.

On Capitol Hill I will support, propose and vote for Civil Rights legislation, Criminal and Social Justice reform for our Black Americans and for all Americans. We must continue the legacy and fight to end systemic racism.
