Being able to participate in any activity, hobby, interest or sport, without thinking of how you will be treated, perceived or stated at, out of suspicion or curiosity, or a sense of 'you don't belong here' and never feeling the 'odd one out' is a privilege #WhitePrivilege
To teach and talk about structural inequalities in society, to understand & work with our client's lived experiences, is to understand these internal feelings of not belonging, lack of access and inclusion, being treated & related to as 'not the norm' or unusual... (2)
Because the 'norm' is where YOU are at on the power-powerless spectrum of society and I am not on the same place on that spectrum. So if at the privilege end, your privilege becomes your norm by default. Still makes it a privilege though! (3)
Applies to all counselling client-counsellor therapeutic relationships. We need to know where we are and where our client is on that spectrum. Many factors of our identity means we move up and down that spectrum accordingly. (4)
But our ethnicity, gender, age, ability/disability (visible differences) hold greater weight to how much we move up or down that spectrum. #diversity #inequality #intersectionality (5)
