Swiss #multinationals are responsible for at least 2-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, if indirect emissions are taken into account. These numbers are similar to Brasil, Japan or Indonesia, despite Switzerland’s comparatively small population and size. 🧵
According to a @McKinsey study, greenhouse gas emissions directly controlled by multinational enterprises in🇨🇭are 7 to 10 times higher than the country’s domestic emissions. And that’s without including the emissions along these enterprises’ value chain. Here’s how 👇
In relation to its size, Switzerland is among the countries with the highest climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Externalising negative consequences of its wealth has been a part of the “Swiss business model” for a long time.

GDP is the principal way the world defines & measures progress.

This urgently has to change if the world is to make meaningful progress on the multiple threats posed by climate change, energy costs, insecure employment & widening #inequality.…
In measuring the monetary value of economic activity, GDP incorporates many of the “bads” that detract from our quality of life: eg war, pollution, crime & natural disasters can all have a positive impact on GDP, yet they cannot be construed as components of economic success.
Significant aspects of our lives are missing from GDP, eg: societal inequality; contributions from unpaid work; the labour of those who care for the young & the elderly at home or in the community; the depletion of natural resources; & the value of data & many digital services.

Working class people are being told by Australian billionaire Rupert Murdoch & non-dom billionaire Jonathan Harmsworth that they must just accept high #inequality & the #CostOfLivingCrisis, but Britain was a much more equal society in the 1970s than it has been at any time since.
Govts are supposed to UNITE people & look after EVERYONE, but our Govt instead uses divisive 'wedge issues' like Rwanda & the strike to scare & manipulate people into believing scapegoats like asylum seekers & unions are responsible for Britain's problems.
Given a supportive news media, it's easy to manipulate people: having endured a decade of #austerity, & now a #CostOfLivingCrisis, it's hidden from voters that from 2009-19, the collective wealth of Britain's richest 1,000 people INCREASED by £480 BILLION.

The evidence is crystal clear: the happiest countries are the most equal ones. People in countries like Britain, where there are high levels of #inequality, are easily manipulated by political & media elites, who fuel division by identifying & demonising scapegoats.🇬🇧
The "general recipe for creating highly satisfied citizens: ensure that state institutions are of high quality, non-corrupt, able to deliver what they promise, & generous in taking care of citizens in various adversities".

The opposite of Britain then.🇬🇧

The UK's political & media elite conceal from Brexit supporters & "patriots" the truth about their hero Winston Churchill's role in both the European Convention on, & Court of, Human Rights - designed to protect people from Govts like ours. 🇬🇧

During the COVID-19 pandemic, #Canada legalized a pathway to euthanasia for people who are not terminally ill, provided they have a disability or disabling medical condition.
In practice, people with disabilities are dying because they live in poverty, can’t secure affordable adequate housing, and are avoiding #institutionalization.

#THREAD on this great article by Bruno De Oliveira.

69% of low-income private renters in England will be unable to eat & heat their homes at least one day per week because of rising living costs, the UK charity Crisis recently warned.

The poorest 10% of households spend up to three times more of their family budget on food & energy bills as compared to the wealthiest 10%, according to the Resolution Foundation. The IFS estimates that inflation rates for these poorest families could reach over 10% in 2022.
A growing body of evidence strongly suggests that #austerity policies are at least partially responsible for life expectancy stalling in England & Wales.

New research into social #inequality & mental distress shows, the psychological impact is profound.…

What is coming between now and 2035? Climate change: increasingly random and extreme weather, flooding, drought, famine, mass migration, pandemics, social upheaval, institutional collapse, automation, economic collapse, tribalism, authoritarianism, war, and general chaos.
Global warming will continue. Human population continues to increase. War drives a need for "energy independence". Entangled corporations, states, and individuals with direct economic interest in extraction and consumption of fossil fuels will continue to fight for their use.
And there are already feedback loops in play: the warming oceans, the melting ice caps, the thawing permafrost which is releasing trapped methane and CO2, the deforestation both man made and from increased forest fires.

Thread: My paper on revisiting income inequality in the USA is now online at the Economic Journal @RoyalEconSoc. Let me explain why it matters here. But first, just look at this graph which summarizes it all… #econtwitter #econhist #inequality #Economics
1) In the paper, we find that the estimates of income inequality in the US over the 20th century suffer from three massive flaws pre-1960.
2) First, because there are so few tax filers in the early years, some adjustments have to be made to get a steady share of the top fractiles. However, the adjustment used by Piketty and Saez was based on ratios of married to unmarried filers in 1942...

#Economy: In India, with huge population, most being poor/low income group, high taxes on consumer goods, services, essential items is bad policy. It makes many products/services unviable for a large section of the population, leading to low sales & lower collection of taxes. /1
#Unemployment: High taxes also rob businesses of fair profits. Many work with low profit margins in order to not make pricing (inclusive of taxes) unaffordable. This puts extra stress on quality, R&D, delays growth, restricts market size & impacts jobs creation negatively. /2
#Inequality: High taxes make many products/services out of the reach of the poor/low income group/middle class creating lop sided social/economic growth, increasing social inequality/income disparity, leads to inflation & bad for internal security, happiness index as well./3

Want the *honest* state of play on #LevellingUp today?

@NEF’s new report shows a staggering 60% of the country needs to be #LevelledUp, and sets out a 5-point policy shift to really do the job, backed by 6 metro mayors.

Key findings 🧵👇🏾

Widening #inequality between regions is damaging millions of lives and holding the UK back.

Since Dec 2019, real incomes have risen by less than £20 per year in the NE, £80 per year in NW and £90 in Yorkshire and the Humber.

By contrast, real incomes in London have increased by more than £600 per year and by more than £550 in the SE.

And despite growing inequality, only £36 per person of the Government’s #LevellingUpFund has gone to these areas.
