Today is the start of #SHW2020! Each day this week, I'll be tweeting about Britain's long, tempestuous and ever-so-slightly bonkers love–hate relationship with its #sexualhealth.

Darlings, brace yourselves. 💋 #SHW20 Image
We begin with the Victorians, who, contrary to popular belief, were obsessed with sex. In the C19, the only known #STIs were syphilis and gonorrhoea. Diagnosis depended on observable symptoms (no blood tests/smears). Effective treatments were non-existent. Image: @ExploreWellcome Image
In 1864 the British government introduced the Contagious Diseases Acts, intended to protect the armed forces through 'regulation' of 'common prostitutes'. The Acts gave police almost-unlimited discretionary powers to arrest any woman they thought might be soliciting. Image: HCPP Image

Happy to see this article with Evelyne Huber and John D. Stephens published in RIPE (@RIPEJournal). Focusing on 18 post-industrial democracies between 1960 and 2015, we re-examine the relationship bn #financialization and economic #inequality. (1/n)
We make 3 theoretical contributions. First, we identify which aspects of fin sector growth can increase inequality. We posit the shareholder value model of corporate governance (SVM) and the financialization of non-financial firms (FNF) can exacerbate income differentials. (2/n)
SVM raises executive compensation and ensures the largest income gains accrue to the very rich. FNF increases the demand for financial professionals, generating well-paid employment opportunities for financial sector workers and resulting in higher wages in the industry. (3/n)

Dear #poverty scholars, it is time for a reckoning. It is long overdue. #Discrimination, #structuralinequality & the lived experiences of the poor is not a tangent, it is core to "mainstream" poverty scholarship.
@nyuwagner L. Mead’s @springerpub Society paper "Poverty & Culture" perpetuates inaccuracies, ideologies & power imbalances that distract productive discourse & policy innovation. This treatise insults poverty scholarship; no matter political leaning. (see more from @lennan77)
It needs to stop. Stop blaming the poor. Stop assuming that history & context do not matter. Stop unfounded explanations such as “culture.” Stop ignoring the developmental needs of children & the nurturing of families.

As poverty & social policy scholars, what can we do?

why i am no longer publishing (my own) #research in #academic journals - a (long) thread 1/38

#AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #academicpublishing #academicjournals #peerreview #ecrchat #OpenScience #publicationbias

(some references at the end of the thread)
(i still have a few collaborative papers to write and these will be published properly for the benefit of my co-authors)

i will soon publish a paper on a pre-print server, with no intention of submitting to an academic journal. my reasons for this are manifold 2/38
1. #academia is inherently corrupt & the publication model facilitates this:
- unpaid labour (editors, peer-reviewers,& authors [ok, they do get paid by the uni which oft = public funds yet journals privately profit & we see none of this unlike other forms of publishing]) 3/38

The carbon #inequality in the EU is staggering. This reflects inequality of consumption and access to basic services, but also inequality in the capacity to avoid/improve consumption carbon footprints. New paper ALERT by @RichardW_ntnu and me @CambUP_GSus!
Imagine EU's emissions in the form of a BIG pile of waste. Just 10% of the region's population make more waste than 50% of the population. Where the biggest 1% wasters make 22 times more waste than their allowance. That is, the per capita allowance to stay within 1.5°C.
Only 5% of the EU currently live within the allowance, with footprints below 2.5 tCO2eq/cap. There is an obvious mismatch between current levels of consumption and the carbon targets. Accordingly, we need to decarbonize and prioritize consumption directly supporting human needs.

1/n Some reflections on #BAME inequality #covid19 and #NHSBirthday. Today is the 72nd birthday of the #NHS - founded upon a set of principles that we hold dear of universal access to healthcare, free at the point of delivery at a time when the nation was impoverished due to war

Thread: After covering civil unrest from US embassies in other countries, it has been sad to see past 72 hours. In trying to make sense of it all, here are things that I would have likely covered in a cable on #riots2020 #GeorgeFloydMurder
2 -The murder of #georgefloyd appears to be a Mohammad Bouazizi-type trigger that has affected the majority of the country and unleashed pent up anger from a significant portion of the populous.
3- It would be a mistake to discount those on streets to a small segment, grouping, or insignificant. The size, scale, & daring nature in almost ever major city highlight the level of anger. Also important to note it is taking place during pandemic-quarantine in most cities.

Added caveat: Industrial civ. is destroying all life on Earth. Human destruction of #biodiversity is not created equally: "Tribal peoples are the best conservationists & guardians of the natural world, & 80% of our planet’s #biodiversity is found in #tribal territories."

The consequences of the #covidcrisis are the macroeconomic topic of the day. Many observers & researchers compare the situation to the global financial crisis of 2008. A key difference is the large rise of household debt & asset prices that pre-dated the financial crisis. 1/17
In a new paper w/ Alina Bartscher, @MSchularick & Ulrike Steins, we explore the drivers behind the built-up of household debt in the U.S. before the financial crisis. We exploit newly available long-run microdata on the financial situation of households from 1949 to 2016. 2/17
