Today marks 20 years since the 1999 Iranian student uprising. Known in #Iran by its “ground zero” as “The Disaster of the Ku-ye Daneshgah Dormitories”, the uprising - sometimes likened to 1989 #Tiananmen Square protests in China - carries great historical significance.
THREAD /1
The background: on July 7, #Iran’s judiciary - using a new, tougher Press Bill - ordered the closing of daily Salâm, which had since 1991 criticized conservatives in power. Salâm was then considered one of numerous pro-reform #newspapers that since 97 election of Khatami … /2
… had exposed #corruption, #injustice, #inequality + demanded transparency, justice. The banning of Salâm + new law to curb #pressfreedom - marked beginning of hardliners’ campaign to crush the blossoming civil society and political mobilisation connected with #reformism. /3

Giving half your money to charity and still keeping EIGHTEEN BILLION DOLLARS is what's wrong with this system.

NO HUMAN NEEDS A BILLION DOLLARS.

A wealth cap of $100 million is more than fair.

#ExtremeInequality = Injustice
#JeffBezos could solve world hunger and end homelessness and still have BILLIONS left over. How is that acceptable??

India (Bhārat), aka Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya) constitutes a mosaic of paradoxes and contradictions starting with the existence of gigantic socio-economic disparities which are in sharp contrast with the spectacular technological development in most productive sectors.
Such contradictions reflect significant measurement discrepancies which, in India's case, could be on the order of hundreds of millions of people.
Furthermore, there is the problem of Islamic terrorists, who are trained abroad and find easy fuel in the contradictions within it.
Finally, there’s agriculture which, by some estimates, accounts for 90% of India’s water consumption. Farmers meet irrigation demands by indiscriminately extracting groundwater, which some say accounts for a quarter of the world’s groundwater usage.

Ten #MMT tips to remember on #TaxDay:
1. Federal #taxes don't fund federal spending, so let's #decouple these two important tools.
2. Taxes offset #Government spending.
3. It's a matter of #logic: #dollars must be spent into existence (by the Gov) first, in order for us to use some of those $ to pay taxes
4. #Taxing for #revenue is for local states/municipalities, not the #sovereign issuer of the #currency.
5. Taxing excessive wealth protects #democracy from #Oligarchy and protects us from abusive market power
6. Taxing #pollution & #speculation to reduce such activities, not to "fund" #healthcare and #education.

THREAD: We’re excited to announce the launch of the Struggling Regions Initiative, in partnership with the @RockefellerFnd, to delve into the issues facing struggling regions across the U.S. and will develop new ideas to foster broader economic growth. strugglingregions.com
@RockefellerFND While a select few metropolitan areas are seeing massive growth, the rest of the country is experiencing stagnation and decay. Take the following stats:
(1)Over half of total U.S. GDP is produced by only 20 metropolitan areas. (2) The New York metropolitan area alone accounts for over 10 percent of the nation's output in any given year, and with only 6% of its population.

Key insight: #Capitalism inherently concentrates #wealth into a shrinking minority & given that our political system is funded by private $ & that $ = power. It explains why regulations can only temporarily slow/reverse the trend. peoplespolicyproject.org/2019/03/05/wea… via @PplPolicyProj
Now of course regulations & #progressive taxation are needed but to truly defeat inequality & protect our political system. We need to democratize the main source of #inequality which is the workplace. Our factories, stores, & offices aka the businesses that make up the #economy.
To do that we have to bring #democracy into the economy. Accomplished by passing comprehensive legislation that helps fund, promote, + incentivize the expansion & creation of #Worker #Cooperative businesses. Which are businesses owned & run by their workers democratically.

Migration between countries in Global South accounts for nearly half of all international migration, 70% in some places, contributing to delivery of #SDGs by creating opportunities for work and the transfer of resources, knowledge and skills. But...
...as @Tanjabastia and others have shown, there is a relationship between #migration and #inequality. Benefits of #SouthSouthmigration are undermined by inequalities in migration opportunities and by limited and unequal access to rights for migrants and families. Meanwhile...

I agree with the sentiment but I cannot emphasise enough that #homelessness, #foodbanks, #ChildPoverty, #HostileEnvironment all existed before #brexit. They are not a consequence of #brexit but #Conservatives policy. It doesn't have to be this way, it's a political choice ->
Before someone from #FBPE jumps in and says "that's because focus has been on brexit" ... not it isn't. This is #Conservative policy. The privatisation of #NHS, the changes in #Education, reductions in #LegalAid ... where has the #EU been in stopping all this? It hasn't.
There has been a constant drive to reform society from health to education, none of which is about addressing the issues of inequality.

There's far too much #bull being rattled around this ref. proposal. Wake up #Ireland folks; yes, we need to amend wording to reflect reality, ensure equality of responsibility is norm; no, it would be terminally stupid to throw it all out altogether, reduce legal standing of all/1
2/ from potentially exploitative employers' points of view. Amendment should not mean rescinding basic tenets on protecting #economic position of wo/men w children & of childrens' rights to home & care there, it should mean updating in line with values & mores of us now & ongoing
3/ See the shiiiiit-stirrrrring for what it is: #brexit deflector #Border deflector #EU agreement deflector #criminalcase going down deflector #Referendum #Women of #Ireland you're way brighter than that, get a grip. And trolls can just bot off with themselves. Hi @TransparentRef
