#BREAKING: Awful news from Turkey.

Despite a shred of evidence Taner Kılıç, Amnesty Turkey's honorary Chair, has been convicted for membership of a terrorist organization. Özlem and Günal convicted for assisting.

We will appeal & we won’t give up until all are acquitted.

"It feels like a bad dream from which I'm waiting to wake up."

This was Gulhnihal, the daughter of #TanerKilic, when I met her in January 2018.

Today her father was convicted of “membership of a terrorist organisation”. The nightmare continues.

"From the start, this has been a politically-motivated trial aiming to silence those in the dock & send a message to the rest of society: fight for human rights or speak the truth at your peril.” Idil Eser ex-@aforgutu Director. By @amnesty Nils Muiznieks. euronews.com/2020/07/03/as-…

As well as Taner's conviction, Amnesty Turkey's former director, Idil Eser, was also convicted for membership of a terrorist organization alongside Özlem and Günal.

This decision to convict two former Amnesty International leaders - without ANY evidence - is deeply alarming.

Defending human rights is not a crime

Disgraceful Büyükada verdict

Taner sentenced to 6 years 3 months for membership of terrorist organization

İdil, Özlem and Günal all given 1 year 13 months for assisting a terrorist organisation

All pending appeal. #FreeRightsDefenders

İdil, Özlem and Günal were all convicted for 25 months for assisting a terrorist organisation.

NO DETENTION ORDERS were issued for Taner or any of those convicted.

They will not be imprisoned pending their appeals. The appeals process could take years.

This verdict is a crushing blow not only for Taner, Özlem, İdil & Günal and their families but for everyone who believes in justice in Turkey and beyond.

That a judicial system can be politicised to this this extent, is a chilling warning for the world.

Today's decision is staggering. Over 12 court hearings, each & every allegation has been comprehensively exposed as a baseless slur. The court’s verdict defies logic & exposes this 3-year trial as the politically motivated attempt to silence independent voices it was from day one

Following the convictions of 4 out of the 11 human rights defenders on trial in the emblematic Büyükada case, @amnesty & @hrw are calling on the EU & its Member States to address the sharp decline in respect for fundamental rights & freedoms in #Turkey. amnesty.eu/news/amnesty-i…
