Grateful to learn from @DrDorindaCA @soutomanning @ilana_horn Manka Varghese & Jamy Stillman in the #DivKAntiracist seminar on "Centering Justice and Anti-Racism in Teacher Education"

So appreciative of the grounding in radical love and Black/ WOC feminisms during this #DivKAntiracist by both @DrDorindaCA & @soutomanning as we look towards a racially just world that does not yet exist.

Also loving the focus on #teacheridentity #agency & #advocacy as central to the work of anti-racist teacher education -- considering intersections of race, language, experiences, subjectivities w/in contexts of education #DivKAntiracist

.@DrDorindaCA talks about the critical importance of recruiting & retaining Teacher Educators of Color to build strong antiracist teacher education programs & the importance of understanding the implications of racial capitalism #DivKAntiracism

But @soutomanning reminds us that it's not enough to bring teachers/ teacher educators into an educational system that continues to center whiteness & oppressive practices that have systemically excluded BIPOC people to reproduce white normativity #DivKAntiracist

Dr. Jamy Stillman also emphasizes the importance of teacher educators of color & that we need to be explicitly preparing all teacher educators to do #antiracist work #DivKAntiracist

We need to move away from "damage-centered" work done through a white gaze & towards nuanced #antiracist work led by BIPOC teacher educators -- @DrDorindaCA gifting us with so much important truth in this #DivKAntiracist seminar

"The work is too important for us to try to be liked by all of our students." When #antiracist work pushes students towards discomfort & perspectives don't center whiteness, it may be reflected in student evaluations -- @soutomanning #DivKAntiracist

Yes & we can be explicit about the student evaluation process & push students beyond the "discomfort" = a bad learning experience paradigm, asking them to use their role as evaluators to enact practices that challenge oppressive structural norms - @ilana_horn #DivKAntiracist

Critically conscious people at the table in tenure-promotion committees, journal review processes, leadership -- this is a precondition to begin a transformative movement in teacher education -- @DrDorindaCA #DivKAntiracist

We need to be a collective, work collectively, find ways to do and sustain the work through collectivity (which means tweaking the academic institutions that we're embedded in) -- @ilana_horn 👏👏👏 #DivKAntiracist

Making an oppressive educational system more efficient doesn't actually transform, improve or move it towards #antiracism. It just reproduces that oppression -- @soutomanning #DivKAntiracist
