#AntiRacism is a religion, which now dominates the West & needs to be taken as seriously as you would need to take Islam, if you lived in Saudi Arabia.

Religion derives from Latin, religare, meaning to bind people together, & is thus a source of POWER.
Americans fought a civil war over the religion of the Union, which was, & became an ever greater source of power that has been abused throughout American history. If the Confederacy had won, power would still have been abused, of course, but in two separate states.
The American constitution & the rule of law mercifully limit the abuse of power, but not nearly enough to achieve a humane & sustainable society.

The religion of Anti-Racism plays out within the religion of the Union & of every other sovereign western state.

#antiracism work in #Med needs to progress beyond statements, shows of solidarity, and hashtags (all performance).

It requires having difficult conversations and facing harsh truths. It requires taking action.

If you’re not getting uncomfortable, you’re doing it wrong.
I’m going to keep reposting this thread on a conversation I was invited to host.

Look at the non-engagement.

People are not ready move out of their comfort zone.

We keep getting distracted with more performance.

More bandwagon jumping on the fad that is now “antiracism”
This is not going to work.

#DEI for a long time has been made just a gender-equity fight. All other marginalized groups have been (surprise, surprise!), marginalized.

Development matters- or does it?

1. This a really important read including views from @EYAlliance and @earlyed_uk who share their disappointment and concerns, along with @NickGibbUK who sees this as a way of improving standards.
2. No offence Mr Gibb- but as an EYs teacher of 20+ years I’m standing with organisations who understand young children, respect me as a practitioner at the coal face, listen to my views, consult me and represent me.
3. The world has changed. And whilst I agree fully the EYFS needed reviewing as did Development Matters- what it didn’t need was a complete rewrite. The opportunity has been completely squandered to build on something already held in high regard internationally.

A hopeful 🧵re: improving #globalhealth through #Decolonizingglobalhealth #antiracism efforts—some examples of positive change:

@DGH_LSHTM & #blacklivesmatter groups gathered signatures from 100's of staff, students, & alumni calling for leadership to examine the school's past
...listen to personal accounts of discrimination.

These groups have influenced the hiring of a postdoc to research it’s #colonial history & legacy. We wrote about Her findings & the calls for change from #DGH & #BLM groups & hope the leadership will act.
Other global #publichealth universities like @dukedecolonize @KarolinskaDGH @EdinburghUni @DecolonizeGh (@HarvardChanSPH) have hosted conferences to critically examine & challenge west/white centric curricula

1. I once thought that my spiritual life was separate from and more significant than my civic life. As a pastor I operated in this way. I was always involved in the community, but it was secondary. I now know this was wrong. #WeThePeople
2. I know this was a luxury grounded in #privilege. Civic life makes the rights of the vulnerable possible. Civic life makes access to education and health care possible. Civic life is based on equality. And equality flows from free and fair elections.
3. The history of #racism in the United States is the history of voter suppression. The suppression of the vote through #USPSsabotage, the dismantling of the #PostalService, is the latest chapter in voter suppression. It violates our democracy. It cannot be justified.

We explore racial concordance in infant mortality. In the US Black infants die at 3 times the rate of white. The reasons are complex and multifactorial as discussed by many scholars like @DrDaraDMendez @maeveellen @mclemoremr @drbdchambers and many many more. 2/12
We know that physician-patient racial concordance confers greater patient satisfaction thanks to seminal work by @LisaCooperMD & others. Also, groundbreaking work by Dr.Alsan tells us that Black men are more likely to access racially concordant care: 3/12

The British state & establishment is dedicated to replacing Native Britons with a globalised population.

We have already been reduced to a minority in large swathes of our major cities & will soon become a minority in the UK as a whole.

THIS, like #GlobalWarming, is happening.
The consequences of both #ClimateChange & #DemographicChange, i.e. the #GreatReplacement, will be dire, & yet neither is being taken seriously enough. The latter is still dismissed by Wikipedia & the political & academic mainstream as a far-right conspiracy theory. #GretaThunberg

This article by ⁦@DrIvanJoseph⁩ is 🔥🔥🔥 it provides mic drop after mic drop of truth bombs that most people in academia simply don’t want to admit. Read. Reflect. Revolutionize. #BlackintheIvory #racism #MedEd #MedTwitter…
“Racism in an institution isn’t restricted to race-laced insults...It’s often more subtle and nuanced, yet pernicious. Based on my experiences in the ivory tower of academia, here is what institutional racism can look like.”
“Institutional racism is white leaders within the prevailing power structure arranging “a meeting before the meeting” to align the majority around their position.“

United we stand, Divided we fall.

But there is a correct & an incorrect way of uniting.
The #FarLeft & #FarRight always result in dictatorships, & the suppression of freedom, but #LiberalDemocracies also organise society from the top down.

We always get government of the elites, by the elites, for the elites, which is how ancient Greek democracy also worked.
We need Democracy that works for EVERYONE, for coming generations, & for our planet.

We need #GrassrootsDemocracy, in which society self-organises from the bottom up, while the state continues to enforce the rule of law & non-violence.

How does a mandatory mask mandate support #yyccc's commitment to anti-racism work after this week's poignant and heartbreaking stories retold with such vulnerability & risk at the public #antiracism consultation? #yyc #COVID19

As the consultation's Co-Chair, Dr. @MalindaSmith said, “We would have failed significantly if we do not act with integrity, with courage. If we do not hear them and act to change the situation.”

#COVID19 had already being laying bare the structural inequities in #yyc and Canada
#COVID19 has disproportionately affected essential workers- those whom our society relies upon for daily essentials. They did not have the luxury to lockdown. Many belong to racialized communities & rely on transit to get to their essential jobs.…

Make your point clear.
Help me hear you.
Don’t be mean.

That’s what I used to say to my sons when they were still early in their language development. I still recall the frustration that would wash over their young faces mid-tantrum.
Now they’re older & frustration looks different. But those same words still hold true. And here lately? I’m also saying them to myself.

Today, I’m reflecting on what it means to use our words.

Especially as it relates to how we #dothework of antiracism.
Like many trying to #dothework, I read this book. I’ve found a lot of @DrIbram's ideas thought provoking. Like this:

“What if we measured the radicalism of speech by how radically it transforms open-minded people? By how the speech liberates the anti-racist power within?”

“Kendi found in his cancer the perfect metaphor for the nation’s ‘metastatic racism.’ It’s in every part of the system, but it’s treatable.”

Surviving, living, and thriving with stage 4 colon cancer. @DrIbram, you are a gift to America that we don’t deserve. #antiracist
“The heartbeat of racism is denial. The heartbeat of #antiracism is confession.

My society has racism. The most serious stage. Racism is likely to kill my society. My society can survive racism against all odds.”

Before I read @DrIbram's book, I wrote this thread comparing American systemic racism to metastatic cancer based on my time as a clinician in oncology, and why this chronic illness has pre-disposed #America to being ravaged by #COVID19 *far less eloquently

Okay y'all - I made a #TOP100 #list of #antiracism #books. Will post on my website soon, & #thread them here (pls have patience as I do so!).

This is obviously not an exhaustive list, & I surely left out lots of deserving books. But here's my attempt, in alphabetical order:
Psst! Also, if you really wanna fight the good fight try to order these thru indie book stores, preferably BIPOC-owned shops (like the ones in the link here). Thanks loves! xo😘…
