Recently I attended a meeting of an organization whose focus is in improving #healthcare. This is a highly respected organization. One ☝🏼 of their founding principles is the 1/
engagement of various #stakeholders including #patients and #caregivers. This was not the 1st meeting of this org. I have attended. I walked away from this particular meeting sad, frustrated & a bit angry. The topic was on #patientcentric care. A topic that is near & dear 2/
to me. The caliber of individuals involved was spectacular; academics, researchers, consultants. As I scrolled through participants as well as listened to the conversation and watched the comments come across the screen I was enthralled with the dialogue however 3/

Okay, I love @POTUS #CaregiverInChief but lowering drug prices is a complicated economic web — healthcare isn’t something that you pay for like a new car, it’s mediated by a third party 1/x #drugprices #pharma #medicare #medicaid
Take International Reference Pricing for example. (Lost you already, haven’t I?) This type of negotiation tool ties drug prices to caps set using “QALYs” - Quality Adjusted Life Years 2/ #health #pharma #medicine #innovation #caregiving #advocacy statnews.com/2019/02/22/qal…
3/ Don’t get me wrong - #health care needs to be affordable & #accessible & costs should be accessible. But tying access to medicines based on the economic “value” of a person’s life unfairly discriminated against older #adults & ppl w/ #disabilities, see ncd.gov/sites/default/…

In light of the Boston police Union leader child abuse, this is very plausible, even probable. I have 2x, on behalf of someone else, reported, via Title IX - the woman or gay man was not feeling safe enuf to report. Yes, there is blowback when one reports. But we can’t be silent.
I am a mandated reporter as a #pediatrician. I *must* report for my patients or face legal consequences. Am same for staff, students, trainees. But in #EmergencyMedicine who do I call if a child may be unsafe at home? Sometimes, cops. Are cops safe?

boston.com/news/local-new…
I have seen #mentalhealth and entire life paths destroyed by abusers preying on children like: This happened to too many people I know. I have seen institutions intimidate, mislabel, bury stories of the victims. (Some predators wait until 18th birthday.)

#MedTwitter showed me the dark side of this, of all times, during a #pandemic. Turns out some who are employed in supposed #SciComm actually stalk patients on behalf of doctors & administrators. Sadly, #bullying patients has gone from "just" in hospitals to dark web.
There is a type of doctor, not all, who believes self a "victim" of patients.. "I am a victim" is used to do mental gymnastics to "justify" #bullying patients who seek answers, report error or harm, initiate lawsuits.

Yes, there is too much litigation. But this is America.
#Tweetiatrician training is for #advocacy on #vaccines #VaccinesWork #VaccinesSaveLives

This has been our lane for well over a decade. As long as I've been a pediatrician we've been using every form of #communication and #SciComm, the sillier the better

Hello 👋 new followers. Feel free to introduce yourself.

Me: A top strength of mine is “input” Others in pics.

I tweet A LOT. I tweet long threads with links to articles, with highlighted screenshots, links to others’ tweets. I hold onto info & reference past yet “futuristic”
You have to know the past to understand patterns and see possibilities as well as navigate past barriers for the future.

If you like control or boundaries, run now as I promise you I will be 🤯 for you.

If you like creativity, expression, innovation, equity, ethics, welcome.
I am going to constantly run around the world finding interesting concepts & facts, be passionate & outspoken on justice/equity, re-use old tweets to explore new facet in new thread.

I’ll shape shift & if you try to pin me down or box me in, you will be frustrated.

Those who:
do not touch patients & never have
who maintain no clinical licenses
who feel free of any commitment to #ethics

are put in charge, by administrators, to control, often via fear & shame, clinicians.

This harms on many levels.
It is anti-#safetyculture.
#MedTwitter
We have lost >500,000 Americans to #COVID19 alone. Preventable deaths. These are mostly the marginalized, vulnerable.

Either document measurable work to save lives, or get out of the way and out of budgets that could be used to save lives.
I’ve seen SO much over the years, in the name of #compliance consulting to siphon off money to block &, ultimately, harm.

No this does not save money.
It harms families.
It monetizes coded racism.

There are a multitude of such vendors & consultants.

Dear #MedTwitter please, please, if you are a licensed medical professional and/or in school to be, do NOT delete your tweets or comply with anyone telling you to do so. It will harm you far more than leaving them up and explaining. Nothing is ever deleted. Can be used in court.
When I was at Harvard Med School and at an esteemed children's hospital, a case against an esteemed professor, that NO lawyer would touch cuz this was someone who had WRITTEN the textbooks and trained every expert, was won ..based on "a document was deleted" - creating suspicion
"Sunlight is the best disinfectant" you will hear me say OVER and OVER - wins & losses *should* be on data/standards but unfortunately wins & losses are in the court of public opinion. So be reliable, credible, and trustworthy. Transparency is one way to achieve that reputation.

In the midst of a pandemic, the inpatient hospital beds of @KingsbrookBKLYN are planned for closure by the end of 2020.  @NYGovCuomo just gave a speech highlighting the need to increase the number of hospital beds and focus resources in Black and Brown communities ...🧵 1/3
...to prevent disproportionate death.  This is in direct conflict with his decision to close the 200 inpatient beds at Kingsbrook, in a neighborhood where >85% of the residents are Black.

Consider signing this open letter to Gov. Cuomo, asking him to keep Kingsbrook open 2/3
Please click on the link below to sign-on the form for the open letter to Governor Cuomo and share. We need hospitals in the neighborhoods hit hard by COVID!

3/ We heard about Dr. Rosen’s medical school yrs @nymedcollege in the early 60s &how he knew the civil rights movement, the movement for reproductive rights, the attempts to mitigate poverty and the birth of Medicaid and Medicare would affect all his future pts &his work ->

Please start to do this. If you find something not factual, take the time to highlight, cross out, write notes on the image. We are highly visual creatures and the red X will communicate much better than your facts or words.

Make the “wrong” or “not factual” a clear visual.
Further, think of unintended consequences. Will what you put out there take a life if its own?

I have seen too many of those paid to instruct #STEM professionals on #SciComm & #MedTwitter professionalism

fail to understand this aspect of #SciComm - how will others repurpose?
How often in re-sharing a conspiracy theory post are you merely driving traffic to that site or person? It is a numbers game. In your “OMG look at this!!!!” are you contributing to this?

Please stay away from those who share a new “look how bad” example

Today is the 30 year anniversary of the ADA! In honor of that, let's take a moment to talk about advocacy.

Specifically, what it takes to be an advocate. Thread.

#ADA30 #DisabilityPrideMonth #advocacy

(1/?)
As some of you know, I am a disabled college student. It's rough. I've had to learn how to be bold. How to be loud. How to come forward and say: "This is wrong." How to stay in the forefront until someone answers with: "We will work with you to fix this." (2/?)
This is not easy for me. I am an introvert. I am not particularly eloquent. I have anxiety. I am easily angered. And, thanks to my disabilities, I am always in pain, always tired, always unwell.

Two years ago I would have told you that I am not advocate material. (3/?)

Many questions coming my way from docs about #advocacy: when to speak up? how to pick your hill to die on?

In Medicine the status quo is programmed into us from the beginning: abide by the hierarchy, keep your head down

That culture doesn’t lead to system transformation 1/
Fear is a great driver for physicians - fear of what others will think, fear of exposing our imperfections, fear of making ourselves a target, fear of losing prestige or privilege, fear of lost income

Listening to courage, not fear, is how we change the system in medicine. 2/
Tips for advocacy in Medicine:

Know your personal values & strengths

Fight for others more than you fight for your own interests

Recruit allies

Be consistent

Be the solo protester if u have to be

Be ready to face the haters

Continuously re-evaluate your motivations
