#TodayinHistory in 1875, Marina Dizon, secretary of the women's chapter of the #Katipunan, is born in Trozo, #Binondo #Manila #PH. Her long life was devoted to one thing, the freedom of the Filipino people. (THREAD)
Context: Marina Dizon y Batolome was the daughter of Jose Dizon, one of the 13 martyrs (Trece Martires) of Bagumbayan, executed by Spanish authorities on 11 January 1897. She was also a cousin of Emilio Jacinto, one of the high officers of the underground Katipunan.
One night in 1893, Marina, accompanied by Jacinto, and in the presence of Gregoria de Jesus, Josefa & Trinidad Rizal, & nieces Angelica Lopez & Delfin Herbosa (the latter was one of the 3 seamstresses of #PH flag), became a member of the Katipunan.
Marina became Katipunan women chapter's secretary, & served together w/ Josefa Rizal as chapter president, Gregoria de Jesus as vp, & Angelica Lopez as fiscal. Marina led the women in staging elaborate distractions for Spanish sentries when Katipunan secret meetings are held.
Old love was rekindled when Marina discovered Jose Turiano Santiago, her childhood friend, as a member of the Katipunan. Both fell in love & got married in 1894 at Binondo. In August 1896, the Katipunan was discovered, her husband captured, & in 1897, her father executed.
Marina, as secretary, burned all the Katipunan docs in her safekeeping to prevent their discovery by Spanish agents. In turn, she sold her possessions to bribe the prison guards & check on her husband in his prison cell. Finally, in Sept 1897, her husband was released.
During the Philippine-American War, her husband was put under surveillance by the Americans for being involved in the 1st #PH Republic, hence his escape to Hong Kong. He would be reunited w/ Marina upon his return to #PH. She died in 1950 in Caloocan.
