97 years ago today the Treaty of Lausanne, peace treaty after WWI, was signed in the Palais de Rumine, Lausanne, Switzerland, on 24 July 1923.
The Treaty of Lausanne defined the borders of the modern Turkish Republic 🇹🇷
İsmet İnönü was the chief negotiator for 🇹🇷

The negotiations took many months. Eleftherios Venizelos negotiated on behalf of Greece during @LausannePeaceTreaty negotiations.
Venizelos's rise to power in 1928 in Greece has marked a new era for
Turkish-Greek relations.
🇬🇷 Leader Venizelos attempted to strike up a friendship with 🇹🇷, instead of pursuing Greece's expansive foreign policy
Extending the hand of friendship to 🇹🇷 were welcomed by Atatürk.
He was invited to 🇹🇷, Venizelos, accepting the invitation, had officially visited 🇹🇷 in 1930
Even after he has fallen to the opposition, Venizelos continued to watch closely Turkish-Greek relations and negotiations for Balkan Pact.
Shortly before the signing of Balkan Pack, he nominated his old enemy, Atatürk for #NobelPeacePrize in 1934

The Treaty of Lausanne -- signed by 🇹🇷 , 🇬🇧, 🇫🇷, 🇮🇹, 🇬🇷 & their allies-- recognized the modern Turkish state & replaced the 1920 Treaty of Sevres, an unfair pact imposed on the Ottoman Empire after WWI.

Such a success for the young Turkish Republic 👏🏻🇹🇷
In TR's share of the post-truth era, Turkish populists and Islamists are spreading a #fakenews & conspiracy of "a 100-year-old expiration clause in Lausanne Treaty" and commiting hideous attacks at the founding leaders of 🇹🇷; Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and İsmet İnönü.
No pasarán !
