Just before 14:00 (local time), #OnThisDay in 2001, a suicide bomber stepped into a restaurant in #Jerusalem.

He ordered pasta.

Then he detonated a bomb hidden inside a guitar case.

The results were catastrophic.
15 killed, 7 of them children.
One family in particular, in a split second, was destroyed.
43 year old Mordechai Schijveschuurder, his wife Tzira, 14 year old daughter Raya, 4 year old son Avraham and 2 year old daughter Hemda, were killed.

2 other children from the Schijveschuurder family were critically injured.

Arafat refused to arrest the ones responsible and spontaneous celebrations were spotted in the West Bank and Gaza. Eventually, the ones behind the attack were all arrested by #Israel.

Ahlam Tamimi, disguised as a Jewish tourist, escorted and guided the suicide bomber to the restaurant.
She was sentenced for 16 life sentences but was released through a deal in 2011.

The mastermind behind the attack, and the man who made the bomb was #Hamas operative Abdullah Barghouti. Barghouti was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to 67 life sentences - the most severe penalty in Israeli legal history.

Barghouti was found to be directly responsible for the killing of 66 Israelis.

According to data we have, up to 2015 Abdullah Barghouti had received a monthly salary from the Palestinian Authority in the total sum of 70,000 USD.
