Today is World Humanitarian Day.

It's an opportunity to honour those who face danger & adversity in order to help others.

Wafaa, our head of mission in #Yemen, is one of the #RealLifeHeroes to whom we wish to pay tribute.

A Yemeni citizen, she bears witness to the deteriorating humanitarian, health & economic situation of her country & helps her fellow citizens every day.

This year, #WorldHumanitarianDay falls during a global pandemic.

In #Yemen, lack of access & government restrictions mean communities, civil society & local NGOs are the front line responders.

"The situation in Yemen was made worse by #COVID19...

...The health system in #Yemen, more than in any other country in the world, was not ready for the pandemic.

"Because of the war, more than half of the health infrastructure is inoperative or dysfunctional," said Wafaa in a speech to the @UN Security Council last month.

Present in 60+ countries around the world, humanitarian workers must be protected 365 days a year.

Their work is essential to vulnerable populations but they are increasingly targeted, as in #Niger.

In 2019, 483 humanitarian workers were attacked & 125 were killed. #NotATarget

On this day, let us pay tribute to these people who demonstrate courage & selflessness every day while working under extreme circumstances.

Tell us, who are your #RealLifeHeroes? #WorldHumanitarianDay2020
