Reference to abt this temple is in Skantha Purana –301-306 athyayam under Uthara Ranga Mahatmiyam.Deity is facing east has the measuring vessel (Padi) as his pillow with his righthand placed over it, reclining on the Aadhi seshan with his 5 heads as umbrella.
#Legend #stories -Ranganatha is resting after getting tired after giving away grains in the measuring vessel to feed the world in the harvest season.
1)Ranganathar retrieved Vedas from Asura Somuga who hid himself in sea.Vishnu incarnated as Matsya & retrieved the vedas.
He handed back the Vedas to Brahma.He is seen here reclining on Aadhisesha as Ranganatha with Sreedevi sitting near his head & Bhoodevi at his feet.
2)Kretha Yugam king Suratha Keerthi did not have a child.As suggested by Narada,he came here &undertook penance.
Suratha Keerthi was blessed with children.
3)Chandra who showed love to only one of his wife was cursed He came to this place -UtharaRangam, undertook penance in the temple tank & was relieved from his curse.
