After a rapid increase in coronavirus infections, Myanmar has announced the toughest restrictions since the beginning of the pandemic.
As of Monday, with a few exceptions, only one person will be allowed to leave each household in the city to do important errands, Health Minister Myint Htwe said on Sunday. It is compulsory to wear face masks in public places.
Office workers were asked to work from home. Factories, construction companies and other firms where this is not possible will have to shut down between September 24th and October 7th. This does not apply to employees in systemically important professions such as food retailers,
pharmacies, banks and petrol stations. Leaving Rangoon was previously prohibited. All domestic flights were suspended on September 11th.
For a long time, there had been very few documented coronavirus infections in Myanmar. Up to the beginning of August there were 353 confirmed cases, now there are more than 5,500. More than 90 people died after being infected with the virus.
