U.S. Interagency Press Event on Iran Snapback Sanctions

Today I take the first action after President Trump's executive order by sanctioning Iran's Defense Ministry. Any arms trade with Iran will be sanctioned.

Sec. Mnuchin
We are targeting #Iran's nuclear & ballistic missile programs. We are also sanctioning key figures of the regime's civil nuclear program.
Any financial entities providing services to these institutions will be sanctioned.

Sec. Esper
Iran has carried out various attacks against U.S. & allied troops. We stand ready to respond to future Iranian aggression. We at the Defense Dept. will help the administration pursue its maximum pressure policy.

U.S. Commerce Dept. is sanctioning a number of Iranian individuals associated with procuring necessities for #Iran's nuclear & ballistic missiles program, especially the regime's Atomic Energy Organization.
Iran must comply with its nuclear compliance.

We expect all UN Member States to fulfill their legal obligations & reimpose sanctions on #Iran, the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism. We are doing this for peace.

US Nat Sec Adv Robert O'Brien
President Trump has signed an executive order sanctioning any entity involved in the supply, sale or transfer of conventional arms to #Iran. The U.S. will be denying technology for Iran's nuclear, ballistic missile & conventional arms program.

If we had not exited the nuclear deal, Iran would have more money, more arms & the ability to cause more chaos.

Iran used the 2015 nuclear deal money to fuel more terrorism. We have stopped that.

Sec. Esper
We expect to act as a normal country. We are ready to respond to any threat.

Every UN Member State has a responsibility to enforce these sanctions. The Europeans understand the threat comes from Iran. We're taking actions that the E3 agrees with privately.
