During one of the world's strictest corona restrictions, around 2.2 million people lost their jobs in South Africa.
The official unemployment rate for this period fell in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter from 30.1 to 23.3 percent, the statistics agency Stats SA announced on Tuesday.
The reason lies in the definition of the quota: It refers to people who are actively looking for a job - which was temporarily impossible.
The second largest economy in Africa is currently experiencing the devastating effects of the corona restrictions on the economy, which was already in recession before the virus crisis.
Millions of people are struggling to survive there, and poverty has increased dramatically in just a few weeks. The gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by more than 16 percent compared to the previous quarter, Stats SA had previously announced.
