Okay I have listened to the announcement and double checked previous promises, announcements and GHG numbers. Response to the @bcndp @jjhorgan @GeorgeHeyman climate promises made today THREAD/ #bcpoli #BCelxn2020
Committing to increase climate ambition net-zero by 2050 is important but there are announcements and targets and there are actions and budgets. Our emissions in BC are going up and fossil fuel subsidies to expand fracking and LNG in BC have increased 79% under this government
.@jjhorgan emphasized new tech & offsets...really worrying. We need those technologies to reduce pollution already trapped in our atmosphere not to justify more pollution. Any leader serious about climate they will rule out the use of offsets & trading schemes to meet our targets
Canadian Energy Regulator data shows pollution from fracking & LNG in BC are going up. By 2050 if @lngcanada goes ahead those emissions – just from fracking & LNG production will exceed our 2050 targets by 160% - even if the rest of the economy goes net zero by 2050.
If the plan is to just buy offsets that means Billions in tax payers dollars will be spent to try & meet our targets & other sectors of economy will have to do more so that we allow oil & gas companies to pollute more & expand. That's not fair or smart when demand is declining
You just can't meet those 2050 targets & build fracked LNG projects that increase emissions.During COVID we have heard, "listen to the science, act early to bend the curve." if we do the same thing on climate all parties would table plans to reduce emissions now from all sectors
Data shows BC emissions have gone up, largely because @bcliberals policies. @bcndp is better plan & likely the best in the country but it needs a bigger budget, sectoral targets that make sure oil & gas does their fair share, no offsets or credits schemes & no fossil subsidies
This year the @bcndp @jjhorgan government spent about $1 Billion on subsidies to fracking & LNG. Thats twice as much as they spent on their plan to fight climate change and 4X what the oil & gas co's paid in royalties.stand.earth/latest/Canada-…
