Thread: This is how you cover #mentalhealth in the media. Yesterday's tribute to #CheslieKryst by @CBSMornings's @TonyDokoupil and his co-hosts/friends of Kryst @GayleKing and @NateBurleson was so heartbreaking, honest, and vulnerable.

On today's @CBSMornings, @NateBurleson, @GayleKing, & @TonyDokoupil had an amazing conversation w/@DoctorSueVarma on #mentalhealth. Varma: "Keep in close, frequent contact w/people...w/social media, we feel as if we know...what we're missing is missing is...deep, vulnerable" Q's

Asked by @GayleKing "why would we ask those questions...when there are no apparent signs" someone's struggling, @DoctorSueVarma notes it's b/c "when we see people who look so put together, we wonder what it takes to hold it together. All of us see the iceberg effect...only...10%"

.@DoctorSueVarma on @CBSMornings: "There's something called high-functioning depression where it's not...can't get out of bed or...not showing up to work. They're [there] but it's at...a high cost...Something acute happens & they" act.

It was true for me! #MentalHealth

In response to a question from @NateBurleson about how people recover after a loved one's lost to suicide, @DoctorSueVarma says you can't "beat yourself up" as "hindsight...is 20/20" but it's a PSA to "ask them...deep questions, make time for them...eye contact." #mentalhealth

.@GayleKing: "How does someone...who seemed to have everything...get to feel...alone...& in much despair?"

@DoctorSueVarma says it's "an epidemic of loneliness...nothing to do w/the number of people you're surrounded by. It has to do w/the quality of connection" #MentalHealth

Great final thought from @CBSMornings's @TonyDokoupil before sharing the phone number/text info for @NAMICommunicate: "There is a cure in those deep, undistracted, eye contact conversations...A text message doesn't cut it for a conversation like this." #MentalHealth (7/7)
