Most of us only know the world-famous #Bahubali or Gommateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola.But there are 5 historic Monolithic (carved from single stone) statues of Bahubali in #Karnataka - Shravanabelagola, Karkala, Dharmasthala, Venur, Gommatagiri. Let us take a look.

1. The 57 ft tall monolithic statue of Gommateshwara at Shravanabelagola is located on Vindyagiri Hill, built in 981 CE by Chavundaraya who erected the statue for his mother.He was the Minister & Commander of the Western Ganga dynasty. It was the world's largest monolithic statue

2. This 42 ft monolithic statue of Gommateshwara at Karkala, Udupi district was the 2nd tallest statue of Bahubali in the world built in 1430 CE by Veera Pandya Bhairarasa Wodeyar of Santara dynasty on advice from Lalitakirti, the Bhattaraka of Karkala Jain Matha.

3. This 39 ft monolithic statue of Gommateshwara at Dharmasthala, Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada district was built in 1973 CE by Shri Rathnavarma Heggade. It has a historic story of how it was built in Karkala, and transported with great difficulty to Dharmasthala.

4. This 35 ft monolithic statue of Gommateshwara at Venoor, Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Karnataka was erected by the Jain ruler Timmanna Ajila in 1604 CE. It is sculpted by Beeru kalkuda. Venur was once the seat of Jainism & the capital of the Ajila Dynasty.

5. This 20 feet monolithic statue of Gommateshwara at Gommatagiri or Shravana Gudda in Bilikere hobli, Mysore district is an early Vijayanagara creation in granite. It was built in the 12th century CE.
