“They create the conditions they lament then refuse all the viable remedies.” They put shit tons of assault weapons on the streets to justify further militarization of America’s police force, which still hasn’t demonstrated competence or capability of neutralizing mass shooters.
And it’s clearly NOT a well-regulated militia if anyone can possess a firearm without the slightest obligation to prove they don’t plan to use it to kill themselves/others. *No MH provider* can save ANY of us from a person who isn’t acutely committable at the time of possession.
Unfortunately a lot of y’all are still drastically OVERESTIMATING the power & authority of psychiatrists and mental health courts, especially in a gun fetishism state like Texas. I’ve seen guns briefly held by cops but very soon returned to previously suicidal/homicidal patients.
Beyond that, if a patient tells you they have a gun but have no intention of hurting themselves or others with it today, that isn’t a permanent guarantee that those feelings or life circumstances won’t change outside of your office. Who do y’all think is policing all of that? 🧐
If my next visit with said gun-owning patient isn’t until 3 months from now, what fairy godmother do you think is responsible for making sure he/she doesn’t have a bad day and decide to break whatever promises they made to me, everyone else they know and/or their higher power?
I mean… IDK who’s gonna do that for each and every last one of the millions of gun owners who either 1) do have a psychiatric diagnosis, or 2) have never met the criteria (yet), thus would never even end up on the MH radar. It sure as fuck won’t be Greg, Dan, John or Ted though.

Yes and many thanks for perfectly illustrating why the entire @GOP is blowing unregulated militia gunsmoke up everyone’s asses. Psychiatrists aren’t mind-readers & everyone who sees us ain’t 100% honest 100% of the time. Ban assault weapons NOW & stop scapegoating mental illness.
Oh and btw @Robin1226, we don’t just ask about guns b/c insurance forces us to, it’s a standard preventive medicine & personal/public safety question that PCPs are increasingly asking b/c 1) America has a gun violence epidemic & 2) America has a massive shortage of psychiatrists.
