1/🧵 Hacked on Twitter - what did I learn⁉️

I & other physicians’ @verified @Twitter accts were hacked last week…

This “micro-dose” of being silenced reminds me to do all I can to amplify the voice of others.

And it made me want to share a few thoughts about this platform…

2/ How did it make me feel?

📍Vulnerable
📍Silenced
📍At the mercy of others
📍Out of control
📍Small

Of course, it’s just social media

But how we handle ourselves here prepares us to fight #Testimonial #Injustice

No one wins if we stifle the voice & truth of another person.

3/ Detachment

I’ve been working on detachment from the lure of worldly things.

When the hackers stole control of my account, my 1st thought was that this was a perfect opportunity for me to practice detachment.

If I’m truly detached, my pulse should remain a calm 46 bpm 😎

4/ Be an utlet toward “the good”

Getting hacked helped me re-examine why I’m on twitter.

I’m here for 2 reasons:
✔️to share hard-core science ✔️to spread love & hope.

If those 2 things remain, I’m participating in “truth.”

If not, I may be spreading “the bad.”

5/ Not an outlet toward the bad

Being hacked meant losing control of my voice.

In a sense, it was an example of how some elements of modern society can quickly get out of control.

I must avoid contributing to Testimonial Injustice.

This starts w me becoming a better listener.

6/ There are many obvious and timely examples.

In my wheelhouse as a #Covid doc, I hear so much about what it feels like to be a #LongHauler?

Wanting to speak but not having a way to be “heard.” Over 100M people suffer degrees of #LongCOVID.

Many feel they’re being ignored.

7/ To anyone reading this, I have a thought:

Never lose sight of the fact that your life has #Purpose.

There are #Tools around you by which to express & achieve that purpose.

Never confuse the tools with the purpose.

8/ I believe #Medicine has as its means diagnosing, curing & saving lives toward the END GOAL of preserving & improving health, self-worth, & personal dignity.

I must not confuse the ‘means’ with the ‘end.’

To accomplish the means at the expense of the end is to fail.

9/ The 6 principles of behavior I have chosen to use to help me decide how to treat others are:

📌 Tell the truth
📌 Achieve beneficence
📌 Not kill or injure
📌 Keep promises
📌 Autonomy
📌 Justice

Every day I walk in the hospital I commit myself to uphold these principles.

10/ The tool of social media is a means to an end. All of us must keep the end goal as our guide and harness the tools of our trade to achieve whatever good we are seeking.

I am seeking to reduce human suffering.

What are you seeking?

11/fin
I vow…

#Trust - constantly reevaluate where I’m placing my trust & whether I’m being trustworthy myself

#Detachment - my tool to maintain personal balance & health

#Truth - I will strive toward “the good” in this space

Thanks for hanging w me
