Not sure how to make the most of your Steam game page?

Even though it’s your #1 marketing & discoverability asset?

Then damn you’re just like everyone else! 😆

So here’s a short thread of things to consider when building your page:

🧵✨👇

#gamedev #indiedev

1️⃣: Don’t delay it!

Get your Steam page up as soon as you announce or unveil your project! 📣

The sooner your page is up, the more time you’ll have to earn early wishlists and start building a core community around your game! 📈

😬 Yes, caveats already. When to announce is a topic of its own...

Wishlists & player interest (hype) has entropy.

If you don’t think you can pull off a year of regular updates and community building (i.e. creating hype)… then don’t. 📉

Just stick to 3 - 6 months. 👌

2️⃣: Cut straight to gameplay in your trailer!

The average visitor only spends a few seconds on each Steam page.

💥 GET THEIR ATTENTION! 🦄

Show them what makes your game unique – the hook – and give them a taste of what’s to come, and they’ll be eager to find out more!

(Yes, I am proposing here that the measure of ‘attention' scales from explosions to unicorns! 💯)

3️⃣: Craft compelling descriptions!

“About This Game" is where visitors scroll next – and they’ll expect to see why your game is awesome! 📜

But don’t go all out with a big wall of text!

😇 Keep it brief – and simple!
🤩 Add a list of main features!
🚀 And consider localising!

4️⃣: Choose the right tags!

Tags influence store placement and the “more like this“ section, potentially boosting your visibility. 🏷 🚀

⭐ Start with your genre.
⭐ Work your way through unique features, characteristics or qualities that make it interesting.
⭐ Be thorough!

👀 Be sure to look at your most successful competitors' tags too! 👀

5️⃣: Use a Call To Action (CTA)

Only a handful of visitors will immediately head for the “buy now” or “add to wishlist” button. The rest will move through their Discovery Queue or just close the tab. 😬

Adding a CTA is your best possible option.

💥 KEEP THAT INTEREST MOVING! 💥

You can invite people to:

💫 Wishlist the game
🐤 Follow on your socials
👥 Join your Discord
📧 Subscribe to your newsletter

For best practice though...

Steam will embed an interactive widget if you include your Store URL in your description!

👇 Like so!

6️⃣: Add some flair & finishing touches.

Use visual elements to make the page more appealing:

🇳🇵 Section banners
🤩 GIFs
🌠 Image decorations

As a bonus, these can illustrate complex mechanics and familarise the game’s features with the potential player! Pull out all the stops!

Steam pages have a lot of moving parts and so may require multiple attempts to perfect.

Fortunately, you can edit at any time!

🥇 Consider your #1 capsule graphics.
🏷 Revisit tags regularly.
🧪 And experiment to see what works best!

🧑‍💻 Use data to your advantage!

🤞 Good luck out there!
