Does it feel to you like this political class (& media) have completely abandoned the next generation of Brits? Thrown under the bus? And everywhere you look there’s this palpable sense of decay. What do the young have to look forward to?
Thread🧵 1/11 ..

Housing ladder? Forget it. Let’s just talk about access to decent housing at an affordable price of say 20% monthly salary. Is the political architecture addressing this in any way?
🧵 2/11 …

Job security? Please. The way we’re going, over 50% of the next generation will be on ‘zero hours’ type employment contracts within 20 yrs - with no access to paid leave, sick pay etc. What will this extreme form of precariousness do to the fabric of society?
🧵 3/11

Education & training? Well you can have it if you happen to have parents who can afford to live in the right neighbourhoods. Plus be prepared to take on big debts/student loans - and spending the rest of your life paying for it.
🧵 4/11

Pensions? How many people below 35 are in line for anything resembling a decent liveable pension?
🧵 5/11

Escape valve? Even ‘Freedom of Movement’ has been casually thrown away, replaced by Nigel Farage’s farts. What has #Brexit given anyone other than more precariousness for business (& politics)? At least in the EU, youth could pop off to Denmark, take your chances ..
🧵6/11

And what’ve we got instead? Heated arguments about irrelevances each one sillier than the previous. #Partygate Hancock, #GavinWilliamson . And of course there’s always a foreign adventure to take our breath away - Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, #Ukraine️ .. Taiwan?

I suggest it’s time to shut up & grow up. Ask ourselves hard questions. What do we want the UK to look like 30 yrs from now? (forget the US, they’re lost!) Decide, start building and paying for it. Otherwise what do we bequeath posterity? Govt debt & perpetual wars?
🧵 8/11

Who is seriously addressing the hundreds of thousands of new homes needed? Aren’t we going to need 50 new hospitals in the coming decades or is Mayday as good as it gets? And how many more doctors & nurses? And schools.
🧵 9/11

How many new underground/metro lines are we going to need in London as well as Birmingham, Manchester to prepare for future populations? Do we still rely on crappy Heathrow in the 2040s? Who’s to take the bull by the horns, seriously revisit island airport concepts?
🧵 10/11

Where are the active plans - the way China (for example) sets itself 10 year deliverable plans? If they can why can’t we?

But then maybe lack of long term planning (& selfishness) is the Achilles heel of our much bragged about democracy.
