🧵A short #nuclear nightmare bedtime story!
I really shouldn't be reading this stuff before going to bed.

Following is an excerpt from "Russian Nuclear Power Plants for Marine Applications" by Ole Reistad & Povl L. Ølgaard from 2006👇

@CovertShores @Capt_Navy @RSS_40 @FORONAVAL @TayfunOzberk @SubBrief @USN_Submariner @TheSubHunter1 @EmbersOfSuns @R_P_one 1. "The first Alfa-class submarine K-64 became operational in 1970, but suffered a loss-of-coolant accident in 1972 when a leak developed between the secondary water-steam circuit and the primary liquid metal circuit, exposing the primary circuit to a pressure of 70 atm.

As the pressure relief system failed to function, the high pressure caused a rupture of the piping of the primary circuit. Two tons of liquid metal coolant flowed out into the reactor compartment, where it solidified.

Leakage of the coolant of the reactor tank was prevented by closing the isolation valves. The coolant in the tank later solidified. At the time of the accident, the reactor had been in operation for only 10% of its lifetime. It was not possible to re-melt the coolant...

In 1986, the reactor compartment was cut out of the submarine, the reactor room was filled with furfural, the upper deck above the reactor was covered with bitumen & the compartment was prepared as a three-compartment unit, now in floating storage at...

End of the excerpt, more updates in the next tweet.

1. in 2015 the reactor vessel was safely removed from the reactor compartment and stored at Saida Bay facility (photo below)
2. The original report says the first Alfa-class submarine was K-377, which is not true, as the first hull was K-64 (yard №900).

End of 🧵, hope you enjoyed it.
