1/ Background: On July 31, 2018, DEEP issued the final RFP for Zero Carbon Energy, soliciting proposals for up to 12 TWh/year of qualified zero carbon energy and associated environmental attributes. Proposals were due September 14. dpuc.state.ct.us/DEEPEnergy.nsf…
2/ Background: Eligible resources included New England nuclear power generating facilities (i.e., Millstone and Seabrook), existing and incremental hydropower, zero carbon Class I resources (i.e., solar, onshore/offshore wind), and paired & co-located energy storage.
Oyster Creek shutting down is like taking a baseball bat to over 5 Ivanpah solar plants; it produced ~5400 GWh zero-GHG per year vs Ivanpah's 990 GWh.
@EricHolthaus The replacement power isn't coming from solar and wind, guys. It's coming from natural gas and coal. Solar and wind can't compete with the kind of reliable capacity factor Oyster Creek delivered 24/7.
Looking to #invest in the #Uranium space? 🌊🚢 For the average #investor the choices are limited in this tiny niche sector with only ~60 companies left standing, compared to over 500 during last #U3O8 Bull market. In this thread I will try to lay out some of your options... 🗂️

With legislation committing California to 100% carbon-free electricity sitting on Gov. Brown’s desk, I wanted to share a timely new peer-reviewed article out today in the journal, @Joule_CP: cell.com/joule/fulltext…
After ~1,000 cases covering possible future tech cost, regional diffs in renewables quality & demand, and different limits on CO2, our study consistently demonstrates the best way to zero out electricity emissions is to deploy a balanced mix of low-carbon electricity sources.

Thousands of Iranians have protested in recent weeks against sharp price rises of some food items, a lack of #Jobs and state corruption. The #protests over the cost of living have often turned into anti-government rallies reuters.com/article/us-ira…
1) Orientation around a goal
Having set the ambition of a renewable-based energy system and taken its achievability as an article of faith, #Energiewende works backwards, solving issues 1 by 1. Energiewende focuses on solutions, not problems, which makes it inherently positive.
2) No in-fighting
Having pitched renewables against everything else, Energiewende then dispenses with internal rivalries. It does not have an obvious favourite renewable technology and it does not play one against another.
#DPRK foreign ministry says talks with @SecPompeo “really disappointing” because delegation “came out with such unilateral and robber-like denuclearization demands as CVID, declaration and verification that go against the spirit of the North-U.S. summit meeting.”
#DPRK “firm, steadfast" resolve to give up #nuclear programs may falter after US demanded unilateral denuclearisation during Pyongyang talks , according to KCNA.
Before leaving Pyongyang @SecPompeo said the talks were “productive” but acknowledged he did not meet Kim Jong Un on this trip.
Underground Nuclear Testing
A thread covering this document’s content, it has some nice details too!
Note: Two Types of Underground Tests - Shaft and Tunnel, Weapons Development (DOE) vs Effects Testing (DOD), Shafts and drilling 1/n #underground#nuclear#testing#us#nts
Underground Nuclear Testing
Rotary Head Drilling, Tunnel Boring Machines (15-30 ft/day), tunnels and cavities, HLOS Horizontal Line of Sight Pipe

"today, the PLA Navy consists of over 330 surface ships & 66 submarines, nearly 400 combatants. As of 4 May 2018, the @USNavy consists of 283 battle force ships: 211 surface ships and 72 submarines." bit.ly/HouseIC
Thread of the day: Techno-economically, #Nuclear could pretty much stop #climatechange. We need to stop lamenting how hard it is to build because it's politically unpopular (circular argument) and instead start making it more popular. Inherently it's an awesome tech. Here's why:
1/6 First, it is and has been the safest energy source in modern history, by far. This includes accidents, whole life/fuel-cycle and waste storage. The image of #nuclear being dangerous is a dangerous misconception. The most dangerous NPP is one that doesn’t get built!
2/6 The waste issue has been blown out of proportions. #Nuclear waste is the best: 1. It’s tiny. 2. It’s fully collected and accounted for 3. It’s recyclable/reusable. 4. It’s solid and easy to store. 5. It gets less harmful with time, much faster than people think.
As a former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, I am astonished at the width and breadth of material #Israel produced on #Iran's violations of the #IranDeal, but I believe it is legitimate.
OK, so I guess I have to say something about my earlier tweet about the president and #nuclear weapons. I do not mean that I think the president will use nuclear weapons while he’s in the middle of rage tweeting. (As always, this is my personal view.) /1
Rather, I think it is important to remind the Trump supporters, constantly, that they elected someone whose job includes more than just triggering the libs. If Hillary or Obama were talking this way, Trump fans would have argued for committing them involuntarily. /2
I especially want Trump voters and GOP congressman to keep in their minds — again, constantly — that this president, like any POTUS, could be placed under immense emotional stress in a crisis at some point that *might not be about him* and on which our survival might depend. /3
I was about to head offline for 2 weeks, but I need to respond to this new paper from @ppchef before I go on whether #nuclear can operate flexibly. By coincidence, I just had a peer-reviewed article on this very subject accepted by Applied Energy by today! So here's a thread...
I'm going to defer technical discussion of whether nuclear plants (old and new) can ramp or change output to match fluctuations in net demand and contribute to system reliability/flexibility until my paper is released (short answer: they certainly can if doing so is valuable)...
🗝(1) “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
For over a year we’ve been bombarded with rhetoric about #Russia#NorthKorea and #Iran yet no one seems to remember Clinton/Gore but we should, it’s important.
(2) #ClintonGore ran in 92’ consciously ignoring foreign policy and there’s no doubt America had war fatigue. Gore’s slogan was “it’s the economy stupid” and when they won despite the #ColdWar having just ended both of them barely even mentioned #Russia
(3) #ClintonGore inherited a political dream of sorts. For the first time #Russia was eager and willing to work with America they were cooperating across the spectrum and agreements with Bush Sr. were in place to reduce nuclear arsenals by 66% Democracy was at its most popular.
