⚡️LIVE ⚡️

Scientist Rebellion is congregating at the southeast side of Princes Bridge, Naarm / Melbourne with a warning for the public:

We are NOT safe!

Governments and companies must stop investing in gas, coal and oil!

#ClimateEmergency

“We, scientists and academics, believe we should expose the reality and severity of the climate and ecological emergency by engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience.

Unless those best placed to understand the emergency take action, then how can we expect the public to act?”

“We demand governments, media and companies #TellTheTruth and #Act Now.

Science has clearly demonstrated that we are in serious danger as global temperatures rise and catastrophic weather events cause more destruction and death.”

“Some believe that appearing ‘alarmist’ is too negative, but our terror at what we know means we have to be honest and open about the seriousness of the situation we are facing,” says Scientist Rebellion.

Rebel scientist Karin Xuereb is a retired senior meteorologist who worked at the @BOM_au.

As a government employee, she didn’t feel she could speak out on climate change.

But now “the shackles have come off”.

Karin will (continue to) #RebelForLife.

“I wouldn't have thought I'd be doing this. I wouldn't have considered, you know, being an activist,” said rebel scientist Karin.

“I know what the science is. I should be (rebelling), to stand up for the science."

Scientist Rebellion Australia believe that our role as scientists and academics can’t be limited to analysing data and sharing facts about upcoming disaster.

We have a moral and political responsibility to take direct action when facts are ignored and our communities suffer.

“As scientists we enjoy the privileged position of having access to scientific knowledge ... Our role as citizens entails a responsibility to participate in the betterment of society.”

“Many scientists have become disillusioned with the legitimacy of political process,” says David Schlosberg, professor of environmental politics and director of the Sydney Environment Institute.

“For climate scientists in particular, there's been a realisation that they not only have to do the science, but they have to do the politics as well,” continues David Schlosberg, professor of environmental politics and director of the Sydney Environment Institute.

@ScientistRebel1 made headlines around the world when 1000+ scientists and academics engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience.

Scientists chained themselves to the White House fence, blocked bridges and occupied buildings.

Dozens were arrested.

“It’s the 11th hour in terms of Earth breakdown,” said NASA climate scientist @ClimateHuman.

“The science clearly indicates that everything we hold dear is at risk, including civilisation itself and the wonderful, beautiful, cosmically precious life on this planet.”

“I don’t get how any scientist … could possibly stay on the sidelines at this point,” said @NASA climate scientist @ClimateHuman.

“If everyone could see what I see coming, society would switch into climate emergency mode and end fossil fuels.”

Scientist Rebellion has over 1000 members across 32 countries.

Rebels range from science students to senior lecturers across a variety of scientific and academic backgrounds.

We believe that scientists must take nonviolent direct action to gain credibility.

Scientist Rebellion Australia acts on stolen Aboriginal land.

We pay respect to Elders past and present. We acknowledge their sovereignty and ongoing resistance against the destructive forces of capitalism and colonialism which fuel the climate and ecological emergency.
