World Water Day: A 🧵

#OTD every year, #WorldWaterDay is observed to raise awareness of the value of fresh water. It aims to promote the sustainable management of freshwater resources, consistent with the targets of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.

1/15

#SDG 6 focuses on making sure that everyone has access to clean water and proper sanitation. The #UN General Assembly set 17 SDGs in 2015, including this one.

To meet this goal, 8 targets must be completed by 2030, using 11 indicators to gauge the progress.

2/15

The six outcome targets include:

🔼Safe and affordable drinking water

🔼ending open defecation and providing access to sanitation and hygiene

🔼improving water quality, wastewater treatment, and safe reuse

3/15

🔼increasing water-use efficiency and ensuring freshwater supplies

🔼implementing integrated water resources management (IWRM)

🔼and protecting and restoring ecosystems that are related to water

4/15

The two goals of the implementation process are to increase aid for developing nations in the areas of water and sanitation and to encourage local participation in water & sanitation management.

5/15

UN-Water makes a theme recommendation in advance for the year. It corresponds with the annual release of the UN World Water Development Report, which is undertaken on behalf of UN-Water by #UNESCO.

6/15

For 2023, the theme for World Water Day is "Accelerating the Change to Tackle the Water and Sanitation Crisis." The #UN World Water Conference, which will be held in #NewYork City from March 22–24, 2023, will begin on the same day as World Water Day.

7/17

The lack of freshwater resources to meet the average water demand is known as water scarcity. Both physical & economic scarcities of water exist.

Physical water scarcity occurs when there is not enough water to satisfy all demands, including those of ecosystems.

8/15

On the other hand, economic water scarcity results from either inadequate human capacity to fulfil demand or a lack of investment in infrastructure or technology to extract water from rivers, aquifers, or other water sources.

9/15

The increase in irrigated agriculture, growing living standards, changing consumption habits, & a growing world population are the primary factors behind the rising worldwide demand for water. Although inadequate water supply can also be brought on by climate change,...

10/15

…deforestation, increased water pollution, and water waste.Over four billion people experience severe water scarcity for at least one month out of every year, and half a billion people live in locations with severe water scarcity all year long.

11/15

Water scarcity affects half of the world's major cities. With 2.3 billion people living in countries with water scarcity, each person receives less than 1700 m3 of water each year. Nonetheless, 380 billion m3 of wastewater from cities is generated globally each year.

12/15

Diseases brought on by inadequate access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene claim the lives of 1.4 million people each year and shorten the lives of 74 million more.

2 billion people globally, or 1 in 4, lack access to clean drinking water.

13/15

There are 3.6 billion individuals worldwide who lack access to safe sanitation. It is also noteworthy that 44 percent of domestic wastewater worldwide is not safely treated.

Therefore, the world needs concrete commitments, pledges, and actions.

14/15

When examining content, method, and structure, the focus should be on expedited implementation and enhanced effect towards attaining SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets.

It is essential to think beyond the box and develop novel, transformational ideas.

15/15 End.
