You come across a video in a language you don't understand. Annoying. π
Wouldn't it be great if you could watch that video with English subtitles? π
You can! With a little help from AI!

(got the idea from @matt0177 π)
@matt0177 First thing you have to do is install Whisper (this is software from #OpenAI, same guys from #ChatGPT).
It's FREE, but not so easy to install. I used this tutorial:
All info on Whisper here: github.com/openai/whisper 2/...
@matt0177 If you installed Whisper correctly, you download the video on your PC and go to the folder where the video is.
Now you type "cmd", to open command-line-interface. 3/...
@matt0177 Now you type "whisper" to use this tool and the name of the video file (you can also use TAB to find this file name). 4/...
@matt0177 If you press ENTER now you'll get a transcript, but we want a translation, so we type "-- task translate".
Is it that easy? YES! 5/...
Whisper will detect the language in the video (in this case French) by scanning the first 30 seconds. 6/...
Now Whisper will give you the full translation (in this case an old tv report about child abuse).
It can take some time, but the quality is really good. 7/...
Whisper will export this translation in multiple files in the same folder as your video.
The .srt-file is most interesting for us: we want subtitles! 8/...
Now we open our video (in VLC player) > Subtitle > Add Subtitle File... 9/....
We select our AI-generated .srt-file. 10/...
And now we can see the French video with English subtitles. π 11/...
Colleague @Lotte_Lambrecht used the translation in this #factcheck @Knack : knack.be/factcheck/factβ¦
