“Krish holds the distinction of being one of a few candidates who achieved a perfect score on our questionnaire. [She] understands that the growing Asian-American population of Maryland ... is an asset to the state that cannot afford to continue marginalizing.
This is why she is aiming for a more inclusive Maryland, where all of us have a voice at the table, as opposed to a handful of token members.” Thanks to @aademsmoco for the kind words.
Our statement on the Biden administration’s first year on immigration:
“It was never going to be a simple undertaking to mitigate the damage of its predecessor. One year into the Biden administration, an honest assessment recognizes both progress and promises unfulfilled.

We are grateful for President Biden’s repeal of the Muslim ban, for expanding programs to welcome Afghan evacuees, for reunited migrant families, and for good-faith efforts to protect DACA recipients and other vulnerable individuals from detention and deportation.

Unfortunately, the same Trump-era policies that subjected asylum-seekers to dangerous conditions and hasty expulsions without due process remain devastatingly in effect. There is simply no substantive reason that we cannot process and welcome these individuals and families…

.@LIRSorg Press Statement on the Biden administration's termination of Trump memo impacting reunification of unaccompanied migrant children with their U.S. sponsors.
“Through our Safe Release program, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service operates the majority of fingerprint sites across the nation to vet potential sponsors of unaccompanied migrant children.

Since the Trump administration memorandum was introduced, we witnessed children staying longer in ORR care, prolonging family separation and in some instances, removing the option of family unification if a child’s only sponsor withdrew their application.

.@LIRSorg statement on @POTUS restarting the CAM program.
The re-launch of this program is a welcome and promising development. @LIRSorg was an implementing partner of the program before its abrupt cancellation, and its impact cannot be overstated.
The program represents our nation’s bedrock principle of family unity put into practice. When families are together, America thrives.
We commend the Biden administration for taking compassionate, common-sense steps to streamline the process, make it safer and more efficient, and expand it to help more children and families.
PRESS STATEMENT: The Biden admin today announced the highly anticipated task force that will seek to reunite migrant families separated at the border during the Trump administration as a result of its “Zero Tolerance” policy.
This is a monumental first step in addressing the imperative question of how we make these families whole again.

Our child welfare experts saw both the irreparable damage of separation, as well as the unbridled joy of reunification throughout our work reuniting more than 1,100 children with their parents. We hope and pray to witness once again the relief and comfort of 600 more reunions...
THREAD: It's been 2 months since a federal judge ordered the release of migrant children in ICE family detention centers; yet none have been discharged because ICE refuses to release them w/ parents, forcing them to choose between separation or detention.
These binary options – be separated from your children or remain detained together indefinitely in a COVID-19 tinderbox – can hardly be considered a “choice.”
Insidiously, ICE is pretending a third option doesn’t exist when it knows full well that it has always had the discretionary authority to release families together.
