Nov 11 marks a century since Armistice Day 1918. While continuing to debate motives of 1mn+ Indian soldiers who fought, we need to acknowledge the war's impact on the 'martial' communities & its larger impact on the freedom struggle. Today, such plaques are the only memorials. 
100 yrs after one of Mankind's most unnecessary conflicts ended, it is perhaps time that we in India stopped sitting in judgement of the men who made up the WW 1 British Indian Army. & salute their contribution, however inadvertent, to the bigger cause of our freedom.
Objects frm WW 1 pop up w/o context in India, such as this field artillery gun. Placed at random in Govt Museum, #Bangalore. Was this piece of German equipment used by the Turks in Haifa and brought back by the Mysore Lancers? W/o proper descriptions, we can only guess.
WW 1 memorial stone in Rajpur village, #Dehradun. While it specifies 78 men went to war, there is a blank on the people who lost their lives. Hope it was not a case of 100% fatal casualties.
