If your just joining me, I stopped by an African Market after shul. A sweet old Ghanaian lady asked what I was cooking, and I said Jollof Rice for my Ghanaian husband. She asked if she could help. I said I would love that. She promptly emptied half my cart and refilled
She then walked through her own recipe piece by piece. It took her nearly half an hour. I am attempting to cook it now. After frying several scotch bonnet peppers in screaming hot vegetable oil( she was very particular about this) every window in my house is open
OH MY GOD this tastes so good and it’s not even half way done. Now I am simmering the stew for jollof and smiling.
Update! My husband has tasted the stew! He says it is alchemy and we must find our fairy godmother Mabel again. Totally worth the opening all the windows phase
Mabel said it must be very thick! Like American tomato sauce or chili. The. She asked me if I had eaten those before. Don’t worry Mabel! I am listening and checking thickness
I think it is thick enough? A few more minutes to be sure!
This is where Mabel’s recipe is wildly different than any I have seen. She is insistent I should cook the rice separately. She said cook al dente like American pasta. And add thyme, dill, parsley basically any herbs I had in hand that weren’t woodsy. I am scared but I am doing it
Oh my god the beef is perfect. I am trying to mimic Jollof with goat because Kosher goat is expensive and very hard to find. Mabel said to season very hard and very hard before braising in stew It’s totally working.
I can’t believe I didn’t ask for this woman’s phone number! Do you have a sweet Ghanaian grandma named Mabel who coaches Jewish ladies on recipes in African Markets in NE DC? Did she mention lady in need of assistance to perfect her Jollof? I’ll pay her to keep teaching me!
My house smells amazing! The rice is filled with thyme and butter.
Mabel’s “pasta al dente” rice seasoned with butter and tons of thyme! Into the stew you go!
Oh shit! Mabel didn’t tell me what temperature to bake at! I am going with 350!
About to put this Jollof in the oven! Godspeed rice! There will be at a 20 to 40 minute bake time.
Could Mabel be Eliyahu in disguise?
I stole a bite from the oven. Rice isn’t done yet but the flavor is heaven.
It’s done! Mabel’s Jollof rice from heaven is done! Pictures forthcoming when I finish fluffing the rice
We are at the delicious finish line! This is easily the best Jollof rice I have ever made. It’s spicy, gingery, tomato rice goodness. I am so happy I met you Mabel! You will be a legend in this house for years to come!
Thanks for joining my Jollof Rice adventure
Updated with Recipe!

My husband was very pleased with this Jollof! He said it’s the best I’ve ever made and one of the best he has ever had! Thanks Mabel!
We were too hungry to take time and take a pretty picture yesterday, but here is one properly plated

This is a thread about what happened at a DC Public school this week. Third graders were told that the Holocaust happened because "Jews ruined Christmas" and asked to reenact scenes the gas chambers.
I can't talk about this in the abstract, this is deeply personal to me.
I learned about the Holocaust at a very very young age... like before Kindergarten. We had survivors in our family. My parents and the Jewish community around us didn't want kids to learn about it in whispers, but in sunlight, with love and support and books and hugs and warmth

On January 6th, my daughter’s preschool will be closed. This is the second time this school year her Jewish school has had to close because of Nazis and far right extremist marching in support of President Trump. We cannot allow this to be normalized.
My daughter’s school is closed on Monday Wednesday because facists are marching against Democracy. They are marching to overthrow our government. They are marching to take away your vote, the vote I fought to mobilize and win. The vote Americans died for.
On January 6th we will stay home. We will not provide bodies for violent extremist hate groups to attack. We will watch movies and make treats and I will lie about why school is closed. Shame on this elected officials who are complicit in this.

This is a thread of prominent black leaders condemning antisemitism and recent hate crimes against Jews.
While we need more voices calling for change, it is false that there has been total silence. Will update regularly and please feel free to add. We are stronger together.

None of the candidates had planned on speaking/attending. The fact that advocates are so focused on claiming this is a win instead of amplifying the voices of Palestinians under attack by Hamas in Gaza, speaks volumes on their lack of integrity.
The organizer of the protest against Hamas, Amin Abed, had to go into hiding. Journalists were detained and beaten. Protestors in Gaza deserve our attention and support in their fight for economic justice and civil liberties.
This is one of the more cynical and disturbing things I have seen in my career in advocacy. People are so busy claiming a win that never was, they have completely missed the real story unfolding in Gaza. What happens in Gaza this week could have rea consequences.

As people read about #holocaustrembranceday, I want you to take a moment and imagine what it is like to learn about the Holocaust for Jewish children. I learned about it at about 4 years old. It changes you.
Jewish kids learn early about genocide. We learn our history, and we learn it early and often. It is deeply entwined with how we move through the world and how we relate to others.
We learn that there were people who saved our lives and people who took them away. These weren’t just soldiers, they were neighbors and friends and teachers. This affects how we respond to anti-semitism in our communities and our movements.

A few thoughts on @TamikaDMallory's @breakfastclubam interview on @womensmarch which you should all watch: power1051.iheart.com/featured/break…
Firstly, @TamikaDMallory deserves credit for how she talks about the anti-semitism. She is very clear about the need to address anti-semitism and fight it. She also makes it clear that anti-semitism poses a threat to POC, Jewish or not, in how it empowers White Nationalism.
I have been concerned for years about the undercurrent of anti-semitism within progressive movements. Hearing anti-semitism discussed on @breakfastclubam is a huge victory. I hope, given the increase anti-semitic hate crimes in NYC, @breakfastclubam will discuss again
