This is a thread about what happened at a DC Public school this week. Third graders were told that the Holocaust happened because "Jews ruined Christmas" and asked to reenact scenes the gas chambers.
I can't talk about this in the abstract, this is deeply personal to me.
I learned about the Holocaust at a very very young age... like before Kindergarten. We had survivors in our family. My parents and the Jewish community around us didn't want kids to learn about it in whispers, but in sunlight, with love and support and books and hugs and warmth
There were parts of our family history that were so dark, violent, traumatic and dehumanizing that I am only just learning about them. Stories about how my family couldn't get everyone out.
It is a delicate and devastating moment, learning about the Holocaust as a Jewish child. It is necessary. It is painful. It is difficult for everyone involved. It requires the utmost sensitivity and nuance in a FAMILY setting, never mind a secular public school
Thankfully, generations of Holocaust educators have dedicated their lives to this task, to the most gut wrenching work of teaching our precious children the impossibly painful truth. They painstakingly created resources to teach our children the cruelest of truths of humankind.
I can't imagine how violated I would feel if this happened to my baby, who loves being Jewish and has yet to grasp the evils of antisemitism in her precious, still developing mind. I have been privileged to shelter her in a way past generations were not.
It is not just a violation of the Jewish kids in the classroom, but a grave disservice to every child forced to be part of this. This never should have happened and I am grateful that the school took immediate action. This is a travesty of education.
It is a unique and terrible pain, understanding how hated you are. Once your taught this, no matter who you are or what hate you face, it never really goes away. It affects you. Its a part of you always.
I want you to understand, Holocaust Ed is living and breathing. Intergenerational trauma never goes away. There are still lessons to learn, whether you are a child or an adult seeking justice.
I am grateful to be part of @ADL an organization that fighting for change. I am grateful for every Holocaust educator, every piece of legislation fighting for the lessons of the Holocaust to live on. I am grateful for the outrage, it gives me hope.
One more thing, Thank you @ADL_WashDC for all your work this week. I admire you tremendously and I am grateful for all that you do.... especially this.
This thread is blowing up, so if you read it, I would really appreciate if you donated to @ADL

On January 6th, my daughter’s preschool will be closed. This is the second time this school year her Jewish school has had to close because of Nazis and far right extremist marching in support of President Trump. We cannot allow this to be normalized.
My daughter’s school is closed on Monday Wednesday because facists are marching against Democracy. They are marching to overthrow our government. They are marching to take away your vote, the vote I fought to mobilize and win. The vote Americans died for.
On January 6th we will stay home. We will not provide bodies for violent extremist hate groups to attack. We will watch movies and make treats and I will lie about why school is closed. Shame on this elected officials who are complicit in this.
This is a thread of prominent black leaders condemning antisemitism and recent hate crimes against Jews.
While we need more voices calling for change, it is false that there has been total silence. Will update regularly and please feel free to add. We are stronger together.
None of the candidates had planned on speaking/attending. The fact that advocates are so focused on claiming this is a win instead of amplifying the voices of Palestinians under attack by Hamas in Gaza, speaks volumes on their lack of integrity.
The organizer of the protest against Hamas, Amin Abed, had to go into hiding. Journalists were detained and beaten. Protestors in Gaza deserve our attention and support in their fight for economic justice and civil liberties.
This is one of the more cynical and disturbing things I have seen in my career in advocacy. People are so busy claiming a win that never was, they have completely missed the real story unfolding in Gaza. What happens in Gaza this week could have rea consequences.
As people read about #holocaustrembranceday, I want you to take a moment and imagine what it is like to learn about the Holocaust for Jewish children. I learned about it at about 4 years old. It changes you.
Jewish kids learn early about genocide. We learn our history, and we learn it early and often. It is deeply entwined with how we move through the world and how we relate to others.
We learn that there were people who saved our lives and people who took them away. These weren’t just soldiers, they were neighbors and friends and teachers. This affects how we respond to anti-semitism in our communities and our movements.
If your just joining me, I stopped by an African Market after shul. A sweet old Ghanaian lady asked what I was cooking, and I said Jollof Rice for my Ghanaian husband. She asked if she could help. I said I would love that. She promptly emptied half my cart and refilled
She then walked through her own recipe piece by piece. It took her nearly half an hour. I am attempting to cook it now. After frying several scotch bonnet peppers in screaming hot vegetable oil( she was very particular about this) every window in my house is open
OH MY GOD this tastes so good and it’s not even half way done. Now I am simmering the stew for jollof and smiling.
Firstly, @TamikaDMallory deserves credit for how she talks about the anti-semitism. She is very clear about the need to address anti-semitism and fight it. She also makes it clear that anti-semitism poses a threat to POC, Jewish or not, in how it empowers White Nationalism.
I have been concerned for years about the undercurrent of anti-semitism within progressive movements. Hearing anti-semitism discussed on @breakfastclubam is a huge victory. I hope, given the increase anti-semitic hate crimes in NYC, @breakfastclubam will discuss again
