I’m not advising #Northam on how to handle this situation but in general White Southern men on the left need to speak candidly about the culture of White supremacy and Confederate glorification that pervades the landscape from which they came. For example:

I mean let’s just keep it real, a White Southern man *not* engaging in KKK impersonation, blackface and/or Confederate fanaticism at some point across his lifespan renders him anomalous amongst his peers/in his community. Hell, in many circles these are fucking rights of passage.

Just be honest and admit that this is what passes for heritage and pride for millions of White Southerners to this very day and that it’s even been exported to the rest of the country on the wing’s of the GOP’s Southern Strategy. The issue is the assimilation of White supremacy.

Nobody should be surprised when White men from the South are found to have burning crosses and white sheets in their closets and/or family trees. 1865 wasn’t that along ago and the Confederate grapes are still sour as fuck. Take it from a Texan.

Mainstream White American culture simply just hasn’t done the necessary work of marginalizing and rebuking the nostalgia of White supremacist anarchy as it was manifested by the Confederacy or the KKK after the Civil War. Instead they just reinvigorated it with Trump and the GOP.

Stop falling for the GOP’s fakery and hypocritical feigned outrage. They don’t need hoods, sheets or burning crosses, a red MAGA hat and the hateful vote that accompanies it are sufficiently explanatory.

That Mitch McConnell is permitted to not just occupy a US Senate seat but also control the inner workings of that entire legislative body speaks volumes about the degree of willful minimization/normalization of the GOP’s White supremacist Southern roots. It’s a national DISGRACE.

Also the rot doesn’t stop at McConnell or Steve King or Trump, not even close. The entire @GOP is in bed with White supremacy and they knowingly aid and abet every atrocity committed in its name.

The main thing anomalous about Northam is that he somehow arrived at identifying himself as a post-realignment Democrat despite being groomed by a Southern White culture that finds humor, pride & gentility in blatant racism. The shock here is that he didn’t become a Republican.💡
