Today is #NationalGunViolenceAwareness Day. As a former prosecutor, I've seen 1st-hand the kind of damage guns can cause to communities and families. 58% of American adults say they or someone they care for has experienced gun violence. It is time to put an end to this bloodshed.
Approximately three million American children witness gun violence every year. Firearms are the second leading cause of death for American children and teens and the first leading cause of death for Black children and teens. #EnoughIsEnough, our children deserve better.
Nearly 2/3rds of gun deaths are suicides. The US gun suicide rate is 10x that of other high-income countries and access to a gun increases the risk of death by suicide by 3x. Gun suicides are concentrated in states with high rates of gun ownership. #EnoughIsEnough.
Domestic violence is more likely to turn deadly when a gun is present in the home. An abusive partner’s access to guns increases the risk of homicide for women 5x. About 4.5 million women in the U.S. report having been threatened w/ a gun by an intimate partner. #EnoughIsEnough.
I wrote #HR1287, the No Guns for Abusers Act, to combat this. Anyone charged with or convicted of a domestic violence crime shouldn’t have access to firearms.
And its long past time we take weapons of war off of our streets. That's why I wrote #HR2959, the Freedom from Assault Weapons Act, which would ban assault weapons and require the government to buy them back, removing them once and for all from American communities.
I'm an original co-sponsor of #HR8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, which expands the federal background check system while also incentivizing states to provide more accurate info for the national background check database.
It's been 100 days and the Republican-controlled Senate still hasn't called for a vote on #HR8. Together, we can #EndGunViolence in America. It is time to stand up and say #EnoughIsEnough.

Kevin McCarthy’s debit limit bill sets a negative precedent that will cut funding for programs that hard working Americans rely on. Here are a few programs that will be cut if this bill is passed:
A thread...🧵
Cuts to Health Care:
💊Kick low-income Americans off Medicaid by imposing stringent work requirements.
⚕️Cut the State Opioid Response grant program--denying 29,000 people recovery services.
🪖Provide veterans with 13M fewer health care visits & longer wait times for benefits.
Cuts to Education:
📚Cut 200,000 children from Head Start and 100,000 children from child care assistance.
🎓Decrease higher education aid to all 6.6M Pell recipients and eliminate Pell Grants altogether for approximately 80,000 students.
This week, the FY23 funding bill will be signed into law which includes nearly $15M for 15 community projects in my district. Here are a few community non-profits and public institutions that are receiving these funds ⬇️
The Hayward Evaluation & Response Teams (HEART) Program will receive $794K
🏥to help improve crisis response & first-responder programs. @cityofhayward
Hayward Municipal Critical Facility Resilience will receive $1M
⚡to power key sites & ensure grids are resilient & clean during outages. @PoweredbyEBCE
1/4 I’m disappointed that the EAGLE Act, a bill to make our employment-based visa system fairer, hasn't come for a vote in the House. Too many visa holders & their families are stuck in a green card backlog that arbitrarily discriminates against immigrants from certain countries.
2/4 Rao, my constituent, came to California 10 yrs ago for a better life for his children—the U.S. is their home. Sadly, Rao & his family are in a state of uncertainty & fear deportation because the green card he applied for in 2015, is delayed due to the per-country quotas.
3/4 Similarly, Suvo a senior team member at a Fortune 500 Company, can't change jobs, travel abroad or start his own company, because of the green card backlog. Without a green card, his 6 yr old son will have to self-deport once he turns 21 because he can't be on his dad’s visa.
1/4 Very exciting news from @Livermore_Lab, located in my district, that its National Ignition Facility (NIF) produced a fusion reaction that creates a net energy gain.
But wondering what that actually means? I’ll break it down. 🧵
2/4 In the 1960s, @Livermore_Lab scientists wanted to explore if lasers could be used to make fusion in a laboratory setting.
And after years of R&D, diagnostics, modeling, design, and simulation, Livermore Lab created NIF, the world’s largest and most energetic laser system.
3/4 Last week’s fusion experiment at NIF produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it.
This historic, first-of-its kind achievement of releasing more energy out than put in, replicates a process that is only found in the sun and stars.
What?! One-third of Americans say it’s time to take up arms against our government? I know EXACTLY who is inspiring the treason curious. 🧵 (1/ )thehill.com/homenews/35722…
Could it be this winner? @RonnyJacksonTX recently threatened @POTUS Biden to try and take his big gun. 🧵 (2/ )
What about this “sharp” shooter? @RepMTG threatened to execute Speaker Pelosi.
