At this point it’s pretty clear the issue isn’t just Trump’s mental health but also that of the millions of Republican enablers who support his sociopathy and cognitive impairment. He’s merely a symptom of a systemic sociopolitical disease.
@EvanMcMullin Also the main reason we aren’t having sober mainstream discussions about Trump’s mental health is folk keep shushing mental health professionals and disavowing our duty to warn under the guise of “politically correct” Barry Goldwater ethics.
Bottom line is plenty of us have been having sober discussions re: Trump’s mental health since the day he descended that damn escalator but jack shit will be done about him or the manifestations of his disorder bc America prides itself on stigmatizing facts, science & integrity.
No matter how hard you shush the psychiatrists, Trump is still waking up every day and “functioning” as the same malignant narcissist/sociopath he’s always been with an added layer of ever more apparent cognitive impairment on top. His public record of behavior speaks for itself.
Every week folk are on here asking WTF they just saw/heard from him as if the fact that he’s mentally unstable isn’t a staple feature of his existence in the public eye for the last 4 yrs. Y’all can’t possibly still be surprised by this shit & you know damn well you were warned.
We told you he’d do everything he’s done and so far he’s done absolutely nothing to prove he doesn’t meet the applicable DSM criteria. He still hasn’t received a reputable neuropsychiatric evaluation despite his ongoing instability b/c his dysfunction has been normalized/enabled.
Millions of Americans see their own dysfunctional selves in Trump, he isn’t deviating from their social/behavioral norms therefore they’re incapable of seeing him as sick, dangerous or incompetent. He’s there because *they* wanted his dysfunction in the WH, soberly discuss that.
Crimes and legislation against women/children punctuate this era because Republicans created this disaster in their own socially dysfunctional and abusive image. This is and always has been a collective mental health issue that far exceeds Trump.
Also I’m sick and fucking tired of all these “why do White evangelicals still support Trump” essays too. Maybe if y’all weren’t so busy denying and sugarcoating the *historical* sociopathy and abuse of White patriarchy/theocracy you wouldn’t have to keep feigning confusion. 😒
The GOP has been diligently impoverishing its base for the last 50+ years, not only intellectually/financially but morally and mostly on the grounds of hatred, fear and the privilege to oppress. They’d already ripped the social fabric to shreds before Trump won their nomination.
Trump is indeed sick and dangerous, but so is the GOP and so are the scores of Americans who willfully vote sociopathy into office every election and are still damn proud to support every ounce of this mayhem. Our whole society is sick and dangerous, discuss that soberly ffs.
Pretending Trump’s instability is a self-contained mental health crisis rather than a harbinger of the societal dysfunction that elected and continues to enable him won’t get us out of this mess. America’s sick and dangerous with no cure in sight.
Start with soberly discussing how Republican ideology lacks empathy and human care if you truly want to understand why they willfully put the country in a sociopath’s hands. Stop acting surprised when they do it over and over again. #AmericanSociopath
Familiarize yourself with Stockholm Syndrome. Wrap your mind around the reality that hateful/fearful people are clinging to an abuser who shares their identity b/c said identity renders them less likely to be abused at all or to the same extent as others.
Resist the urge to retreat to the false security of statements like “this isn’t who America is” when the facts on the ground continue to reveal that we’re surrounded and governed by broken people who delight in breaking other people with their votes/power.
There are layers of generational abuse, trauma, illness and indiscretion being self-medicated with fanatical religiosity and right wing partisanship in the communities most enthralled by Trump/the GOP. They create the conditions they lament then refuse all the viable remedies.
Until we start acknowledging and addressing the depletion of community resources for education, recreation, employment and healthcare that’s fueling this degree of social dysfunction in America, the ground remains fertile for sick & dangerous to not only thrive but win elections.

The thing that’s always struck me about this (not only as a Black woman but also as a psychiatrist IRL who’s literally tasked with helping people cope with stress, illness and the ups & downs of life) is the Black woman savior complex of it all. It’s subconscious but ubiquitous.
As with many things in America, I also think it’s yet another sociological phenomenon brought to us by slavery. A lot of White family systems fell apart (continue to) without the presence of a Mammy or some form of matriarchal Black help in the home. jstor.org/stable/2714687
Except for all intents/purposes, VA *was* TX not too long ago. The 2021 Gubernatorial election set back over a decade of hard-won progress by VA Democrats. It can happen in ANY historically or recently “blue” state at the drop of a dime, if enough White voters DEFECT/vote GOP. 🥴
The other thing to remember is #WeTriedToTellThem ALL of this shit was gonna happen (all over again) but HELL NO. This is yet another consequence of MAGAts who have both a death wish and outsized influence on every single public/private system in 🇺🇸 running the asylum. 🤡👹👺🦊
Adding this here b/c it’s really important that we also recognize how the toxic/violent masculinization of GOP women voters also extends to #MAGAWoman elected officials. They’ve created an army of Ashli Babbitts who aid/abet the radicalization of their menfolk & themselves. 👹🤡
By now we’ve seen too many GOP/GOP adjacent mothers/wives/girlfriends either completely “overlook” the extremism in their midst or actively enable and facilitate the obstinance/defiance and evasion of consequences that leads to White, right wing domestic terrorism. #VanillaISIS
The thing that really chaps my hide about it is I’ve heard Republicans vilify Black family values & label us criminals/social deviants my whole life, yet here they are breeding & grooming the most PROLIFIC White domestic terrorists America’s ever seen and the NARRATIVE is SILENT.
