I'm still noticing a lack of good books amongst the #servicedesign community that actually speak to organizational dynamics and change. I wrote this post for a friend but I thought I would also post it here for those that might find it useful Warning: Tweetstorm ahead!
1. The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organization By Peter Senge goodreads.com/book/show/2551… Pretty foundational book speaks the principles of what needed to create effective learning organizations
2. Teaming by Amy Edmonson goodreads.com/book/show/7023… Really great book by the author of the term psychological safety on how to develop the conditions for effective teamwork and learning within orgs
3. Group Dynamics for Teams by Daniels Levi goodreads.com/book/show/1624… Very practical book that talks about the dynamics of teams and how to shape them to be more effective
4. Nibble Theory by Kaleel Jamison - goodreads.com/book/show/7835… One of the most inspiring books (despite its small size) on dynamics of power and ways it can be used to either empower or hold people down. (PS It's impossible to talk about org change without addressing "power")
5. Smart Leaders, Smarter Teams by Roger Schwartz goodreads.com/book/show/1630… - Really good book, uses the theories of Argyris (scholar on organizational learning) and translates them into two mindsets Unilateral Control and Mutual Learning, and shows how teams can foster the latter
6. Organizational Culture and Leadership by Edgar Schein - goodreads.com/book/show/2220… - Few names are as important in this space as Schein. This book is an excellent guide on how to understand organizational culture.
7. Humble Inquiry and Humble Consulting by Edgar Schein goodreads.com/book/show/1738… and goodreads.com/book/show/2703… Really classic books by Edgar Schein, on creating a "ask" not "tell" culture more open, curious, inquiry culture, a basis for effective collaboration.
8. Dare to Lead by Brené Brown - goodreads.com/book/show/4010… Based on Brown's research on what is needed from leadership to foster better orgs. This book also had has so many tools that can be used.
Emergent Strategy - Adrienne Maree Brown goodreads.com/book/show/2963… Great book, that elevates our relationship to change. Super inspiring and might change the way you think about our practice.
Power & Love by Adam Kahane goodreads.com/book/show/7685… More social change-oriented, but a fantastic book that talks about the balance of Love and Power in creating change.
Paradoxes of Group Life by Smith and Berg - goodreads.com/book/show/6949… A very impactful book for me, it explores how paradoxes, and our desire to escape them, fuels conflicts and stuckness within groups.
There are, of course, many more but these are some of the ones that have had an impact on me. I'd be interested to see if others have more recommendations to add to this list as well.
