@IrvWashington3 "Twenty years ago, our members had a strong belief and they made a couple of bets on some things about the future of journalism." — @IrvWashington3 #Happy20thONA
The first bet: quality online news. Image
The second bet: community. Image
In 20 years, ONA has grown from a few dozens of intrepid digital pioneers to thousands of community members working together to make ONA and digital journalism better and better. #Happy20thONA ImageImageImage
In the early days, ONA contributed to legitimizing online journalism as ... journalism.

Now ONA supports innovative projects and people, organizes local journalism communities and more. Here are a couple of projects we supported via the Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education that illustrate the impact of these efforts. #hackthecurriculum
.@GeorgiaNewsLab started as an idea to diversify investigative journalism in Atlanta through collaborations between HBCUs and local news. Today it's an award-winning collaborative that has provided valuable reporting experience to over 50 students. #hackthecurriculum
.@merrillcollege received $50,000 from the Challenge Fund this year — after an initial $30,000 in 2018 — in recognition of climate change reporting with an impressive collaborative data journalism component.

@merrillcollege Leading up to ONA's 20th anniversary, we spent the past year developing our new strategic plan. One of the big challenges? Defining a typical ONA member and what they do.

(Hint: There's no typical job of an ONA member!)
Today ONA serves a diverse, global community of people who share the same things our founders did 20 years ago.

Which of these qualities resonate with you?#Happy20thONA
At 20, ONA's mission to inspire and support innovation in digital journalism remains the same. #Happy20thONA
Looking forward, we are excited to serve this mission via five focus areas:
🔹 Develop strategies for emerging tech
🔹 Share best practices on audience engagement + metrics
🔹 Innovative news storytelling
🔹 Experiment and find new revenue + business models
🔹 Cultivate newsroom leadership, culture and diversity

#Happy20thONA
Our mission, vision and values are at the core of everything we do and why we exist.
Our values are:
🔹 Integrity
🔹 Journalistic ethics
🔹 Freedom of expression
🔹 Journalistic excellence
🔹 Community
🔹 Inclusivity

"These values are why I’m so proud to be a part of ONA’s story over the past 10 of its 20 years. In that time, my career has grown and ONA has been with me every step of the way." — ONA President @mjenkins #ONA19 #Happy20thONA
#TBT Here's ONA President @mjenkins at her first @ONAConf in 2010, where she shared her journey of teaching herself digital media skills to create jobs for herself that didn't exist before. vimeo.com/16325660
