At the UofG press conference for the FIELD study results, published today @NEJM, @UofGMVLS’s @WillStewNeuro says ‘This is the largest study to date looking at the incidence of neurodegenerative disease in any sport not just former professional footballers’ #WorldChangingGlasgow
Commenting on the findings from this landmark UofG led study @WillStewNeuro says: ‘Although former pro football players had a higher risk of death from neurodegenerative disease, they are less likely to die of other common diseases, such as heart disease and some cancers’.
‘Looking in detail at neurodegenerative disease subtypes, the study revealed risk ranged from a 5-fold increase in #AlzheimersDisease, through an approximately 4-fold increase in #MND, to a 2-fold risk for #Parkinsons Disease, compared to population controls’ @WillStewNeuro
.@WillStewNeuro added ‘Going forward, whilst we must make every effort to identify the factors contributing to this increased risk for former football players, there are also wider potential health benefits of playing football to be considered’ #WorldChangingGlasgow

Today marks the start of #BlackHistoryMonth and we wanted to start it off by telling you a bit about UofG alumnus James McCune Smith - the first African American to be awarded a medical degree anywhere in the world #UofGBHM20
James McCune Smith was born into slavery in 1813 in New York City. Despite being intellectually brilliant, he was denied entry to American universities due to his race. So he came to Scotland to study at the University of Glasgow.
Dr Smith earned three degrees at UofG, returned to New York in 1837 to open his own medical practice and pharmacy (the first African American owned and operated pharmacy in America) and became a leading figure for black civil rights and the abolitionist movement.
