Today marks the start of #BlackHistoryMonth and we wanted to start it off by telling you a bit about UofG alumnus James McCune Smith - the first African American to be awarded a medical degree anywhere in the world #UofGBHM20
James McCune Smith was born into slavery in 1813 in New York City. Despite being intellectually brilliant, he was denied entry to American universities due to his race. So he came to Scotland to study at the University of Glasgow.

Thank you to @AamerAnwar for being a passionate working Rector at the University for the past 3 years, harnessing his skillset as a human rights lawyer and bringing something quite unique to the role. This is the last day in Aamer's term and we thank him for his service. 1/3
From tomorrow (31st March), the role of Rector will be vacant due to the current #COVID19 situation. The University and Students' Representative Council @gusrc wants to ensure the election is as demographic as possible and we garner high levels of student engagement. 2/3

#COVID19 UPDATE: We want to advise you that 3 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 & all 3 are self isolating. Guidance from health officials is that cases like these are to be expected given the outbreak.

As @UofGVC outlined in our FB Live earlier this week, confirmation of positive results is entirely to be expected as the pandemic evolves. We're working closely with Health Protection Scotland & will remain open – though, face-to-face teaching will cease from Mon 16 March. 2/4

THREAD - #COVID19 UPDATE (14 March): From Monday 16 March all face-to-face teaching on our campuses in Glasgow & @DumfriesCampus will end & course materials will be placed online.
The University will not be closed. Most facilities - including @uofglibrary - will remain open.
This follows our decision that exams scheduled for the April/May assessment period will not be undertaken in exam halls on campus.
We're committed to ensuring all students can complete their academic programme and graduate or progress on time.
