How about a character from a fictional mythology? Someone who the whole world was looking to before he even was born. I want to talk about Aang from Avatar: The Last Air Bender as my #SupermanAnalogue today. Image
Look... I'm late to this party. I literally just finished the series yesterday after @OSPyoutube got me interested and then @breadeagles and @samlwillson pushed me over the edge to watch it when we covered the film adaptation on Another Pass (certainpov.com/another-pass-p…) but... damn!
I am in awe of how incredible this series is. #AvatarTheLastAirbender tells such a wonderful story about the conflict of destiny and choice and it's easy to focus on the rich cast of dynamic, well defined characters, but you can't discount Aang from that conversation. Image
Aang is the titular "Avatar". In the setting there are all kinds of people who can control specific Grecian elements with varying degrees of mastery, but only one soul can control all of the elements. Aang is the latest reincarnation of that soul. Image
Like Superman, Aang is the last survivor of his people. However, his people, the Air Nomads, were wiped out for political reasons. Aang survived by being Frozen in ice for 100 years. When he emerged, the fire nation has nearly conquered the world and he must stop them. Image
Just as an Air Nomad, Aang could play the Superman role, what with his agility and mobility. Whether gliding under his own power or riding his giant flying bison, Appa, he's an airborne adventurer. Image
But as he travels, he comes to master the various elements and becomes capable of truly astounding feats. By the end of the series, he can move mountains, scorch fields, and part seas. His power and skill definitely puts him on par with some of the heaviest hitters I've covered. Image
And that's not even talking about the Avatar state, when his eyes and tattoos glow and his power is charged with the wisdom of all of his past lives. Image
More importantly than the power, however, is the character of Aang. He's a young boy in the series, so he jokes and makes light of things, but he's also a pacifist. He takes action when he has to or when people are endangered, but he despises violence and discourages it in others Image
When he is told that the fate of the world rests on him hurting someone, he searches his soul and takes council from his past lives on the matter. Ultimately, it is his rejection of that in favor of peace that proves his true heroism. Violence is not to be taken casually. Image
Aang has an iconic design, great powers with interesting applications, and a strong moral code that is tempered by the burden of destiny. His journey is whimsical at times, moving at others, and ultimately wonderful to watch. Image
The show is 3 seasons and it is well worth it. Aang is a fantastic hero that seriously examines the consequences of his actions. Just fucking delightful. Image
