THREAD: @olicav's Recount and recall - Dual coding in practice in the maths classroom.
Process: Teacher reveals diagrammatic schema piece by piece with some narration, pausing at intervals to allow student to copy the diagram. 1/n #mathschat
@olicav TRACING: Students get in pairs. Each student places their finger on the page at the centre and traces along the paths. One must explain out loud what that part of the diagram is related to in as much detail as possible. The other traces and listens. 2/n
@olicav The students then swap rolls for the other half of the diagram. Both still tracing but the listener is now the narrator.
Students then practise retrieval by covering the diagram and trying to complete as much as they can from memory. 3/n
@olicav I have included highly relevant icons in each section and also added some additional icons that prompt interrogative elaboration. Explicitly model to students how to ask hows and whys, make comparisons and sort their thoughts. 4/n
@olicav Finally, this is not meant to develop conceptual understanding but to make my schema visible and structured in a way that supports recall and strengthening connections. It works really well. I have tried it with students - the results were remarkable! 5/5

A thread of Frayer models around the language of set notation. Something I always find hard to explain to novices:
The universal set
The Union

If you haven't read "Is it true that some students just can't do maths?" by @danielwillingham yet then I'd really recommend it. Some thoughts on it to follow 1/n

2/n humans are born with an ability to appreciate space and number and their relationship to a degree.
3/n 10 month old infants can appreciate the difference between 1 and 2 but are less effective at judging between 2 and 4. Thesis monkeys outperformed infant humans in this aspect.

Doing a student voice each half term on google forms or survey monkey with your class is an excellent way to reflect on your practice on an individual and department level. Who does this?
1. Is there any entry task every lesson that tests prior learning? (Are non-negotiable in place?)
2. Do I feel I am getting better at maths this year?
3. Which forms of feedback help you improve? Please check more than one: (written, review lessons, Hegarty maths, mini-whiteboards, verbal explanations)
4. I feel I can learn well from my teacher’s explanations
5. The behaviour of most of my class is good so few distractions
