Rey had been dreading this camping trip for weeks. She had already distanced herself from Finn because she didn’t want to hurt him, but it’s like the more she put space between them, the more he clung to her.
It was suffocating and she wanted out, but it was hard to let go.
Their relationship had been sweet in college. It took a while on her end, but she grew to love him because of his persistence.
She knew it was time to call it quits. They had been together for nearly three years, but there was no spark.
However, it was difficult to let go of the man that wrote her that heartfelt letter.
Rey was crying. Full blown, snotty nosed, crying.
The sign-off was smudged, but she was pretty sure she knew who it was. She just had to find him.
She was about to turn the corner and head to his locker when Finn appeared in front of her with a bouquet of roses.
"Rey, I love you. You may not feel the same, but I have to tell you."
She froze, unsure of what to do.
She was wrong - so utterly wrong. Those beautiful words were *not* his - they were Finn's.
"Please tell me you feel the same." He pleaded.
She held up the letter and showed it to him. "Did you write this?"
He nodded and a tear slipped down her cheek.
She felt gutted at the response, but also hopeful.
Finn cared about her and wrote this beautiful letter. Maybe she could grow to love him.
All she had to do is take a leap of faith.
"Maybe not yet, Finn...but I could someday."
"Rey, why won't you talk to me?" He asked.
She had been avoiding him and it was breaking his heart. He was about to leave for college and his best friend wasn't speaking to him.
"I'm not avoiding you, Ben."
He shook his head because she couldn't even look him in the eyes.
"Please Rey, you don't have to hide." He paused, taking her hands into his. "Not from me."
"I'm just not feeling well, Ben." She insisted.
He let go of her hands and nodded. "Okay, Rey. But you'll be there tomorrow to see me off, right?"
"Of course."
His eyes softened at her response.
"I'm happy for you - you know that right?"
She smiles but it doesn't reach her eyes. "I know, Ben."
Tomorrow comes and she doesn't show up.
His heart is broken.
“Hey, have you heard from Ben?” Rey asked.
Poe shook his head. “No, but I really need to catch up with him. He called me the other day.”
He paused and saw the frown form on Rey’s face.
“Have *you* talked to him?”
Rey looked down, avoiding looking Poe in the face. “I still need some time away from him. He’ll be back in the summer and we can talk then.”
Poe sighed. “What happened between you two?”
“Nothing.”
Poe didn’t buy that one bit.
“I don’t think that’s true, Rey.”
She wanted to scream at the implication. Nothing happened, but she had hoped something would.
That was the problem.
“I...he didn’t feel the same, okay? I was stupid and I’m getting over it.”
Her friend’s eyes softened.
“It’ll be okay, Rey.”
She stifled a sob and looked down at the ground.
“I don’t think it will.”
"Rey, please. Let me explain." Finn pleaded.
She ran her fingers through her hair and looked around with zero focus. She knew what was about to happen because of the tell tale fogginess of her brain.
She was having a panic attack.
"Shit, shit Rey! REY!"
As he yelled a figure emerged from the woods. It was Ben and he did not look happy to see Finn, but for the sake of Rey he kept an even expression.
"Finn, back away from her. She's having a panic attack."
Ben bent down and tucked a stray strand of hair behind Rey's ear.
"It's gonna be okay, sweetheart." He promised.
Rey nodded, feeling instantly at ease with *his* presence.
She could feel Finn's stare burning with annoyance, but she was not well enough to scold him.
As if sensing her thoughts, Finn spoke up. "Don't you have a fiancée you need to take care of?"
"Fiancée?" She said with disbelief.
"You're engaged?" She said woefully, completely forgetting herself and her audience.
Ben's jaw clenched visibly.
"So now who's the liar?" Finn taunted.
"I'm not gonna start with you, Finn. Rey is panicking and we need to get her to take deep breaths."
He looked at Rey with gentle eyes and rubbed his thumb back and forth over her wrist.
"Are you really someone else's?"
"Sweetheart, we'll talk about this later."
She sniffled and nodded. The most important thing was getting her heart rate down.
"Breath with me."
She took a deep breath and her head began to clear.
Everything was always more clear with Ben around.
"Do you really have to spill this on her?"
Rose grinned at Hux as she gestured to the soda fountain waitress to add more grenadine.
"Listen, this is the best way to start the date on the wrong foot."
"Ben, we're so sorry." Rose blurted out.
"We're all sorry." Jannah corrected.
Ben laughed and shook his head. "I can't even be mad. This is just so YOU. All of YOU."
"What'd I miss?"
The friend group turned to see the blonde "harlot" all cleaned up. In place of her old blouse was a Maz's Diner t-shirt on to replace her stained top.
"Just an apology, sweetheart."
"I'm sorry for calling you a harlot, Rey."
She snorted as she took off her wig and joined her friends in their old corner booth.
"You're forgiven."
She paused and smiled fondly at their reunited group. "All of you."
"Well, we wanted to teach you fools a lesson for trying to meddle..." Ben started.
"But your buffoonery sort of ruined that." Rey finished.
Rose let out an amused squeal. "So my plot did work!"
Poe coughed. "Ahem, MY plot."
"Anyways, I'm glad you are all here." Ben said, staring at Rey intently as he pulled out an envelope.
Rey's eyes widened and she reached into her pocket and pulled out an envelope as well.
Their friends watched with bated breath.
