Just want to put this in context again: $1.7 TRILLION in wealth was wiped out in the stock market since Sunday. $1,700 billion. In 2 days. #DemDebate
I'm not feeling the fire from Warren tonight. Really taking it to Bernie with feather gloves.
Is that an expression?
Pete is smart. His suggestion that we need a president who LOWERS the collective blood pressure of America is dead on. #Biden2020#DemDebate2020
Why is Steyer here? He's even getting golf claps to his responses.
Biden getting huge applause noting Bernie's positions on gun control. This kind of reaction is a very good sign for Joe. #DemDebate
Ok, I'm obviously biased, but Bernie's pitch is pretty weak tonight. He's not responding to anything, just continuing to give stump speeches as statements of fact.
Pete's responses to Sanders' attacks on his contributions is pretty good.
Big applause when Biden defends his poll numbers and suggests he'll win SC. I didn't notice a similar response when Bernie made similar comments. #DemDebate
Bloomberg is getting no reaction when mentioning how many black ppl he knows. #DemDebate
Pete is a lot more self-aware about race than anyone on stage (except Biden, of course). I don't think that's a controversial...OOMG WTF DID BLOOMBERG JUST SAY?? #DemDebate
Pete: Hey white people, let's have a little awareness and humility about our position, and work to make things better...
Bloomberg: HEY I KNOW IT'D BE HARDER TO BE A BILLIONAIRE IF I WAS BLACK, I KNOW LOTS OF BLACK PEOPLE WHO WISH THEY WERE WHITE
loooool #DemDebate
Warren suddenly remembers she's supposed to be angry.
Ouch, it kind of feels like Warren lost that exchange. My general sense is when you pause for boos and the audience doesn't react, it wasn't a good hit. #DemDebate
Bloomberg, free advice: don't mention the number of women who filed complaints against you like you think a small number is ok. #DemDebate
This was a very bad attack from Warren against Bloomberg, even if it's true. Luckily Bloomberg doesn't miss an opportunity to make himself look bad by bickering about how sorry he is the woman "heard what she heard", or something to that effect. #DemDebate
Wait, is Bernie trying to say that OTHER candidates' healthcare plans would cost MORE in the short term??? Long-term aside, it's INDISPUTABLE M4A will cost more in the short term. That's just basic fact. #DemDebate
Steyer's main strategy seems to be to hope people forget Joe Biden is on stage when presenting himself as an alternative to Bernie/Bloomberg. #DemDebate
Pete for at least the 2nd time tonight, makes a compelling case for Biden by noting how important it is to keep the House. #DemDebate
Again, I know I might be biased, but it seems to me like Biden is getting huge applause after just about everything he says. I'm not feeling the same reaction from the audience for anyone else. #DemDebate
Ok, Klobuchar now stealing Pete's notes and making a compelling case for Biden, remarking how important it is to actually get things done. #DemDebate
Bloomberg rambles about "catastrophe". Good metaphor for his campaign...wait, is the crowd booing BERNIE here for unfairly quipping Bberg's only friends are other billionaires, or are they booing in AGREEMENT? Genuinely weird moment there. Bernie even paused like he was confused.
The fact Biden is getting cheers before his sentences are finished tells me the crowd really, really likes what they assume he is saying while they're cheering. #DemDebate
OK, CONFIRMED THIS TIME, BERNIE IS BEING BOOED FOR ATTACKING BIDEN. THIS IS HUGE. #DemDebate
Real talk, Klobuchar is getting nothing out of this.
Well, Klobuchar got away from a spar with Biden without being booed, so I guess she should consider that a win. Off topic, but I'm having real difficulty even following what Klobuchar is talking about. Pete also getting moderate applause for attacking Sanders.
Ok, that's a couple times Bernie has bragged about his D- rating from the NRA. Is that...bad? It's bad, right? Because in a lot of schools, D- is called "a passing grade".
Source: The Simpsons, Bart passes the 4th Grade
I'm hearing a pattern in the audience...Bloomberg gets hoots in a specific pitch, suggesting it's like 5 very loud people in the audience.
I just noticed that "Did Bloomberg" is trending...that seems very funny to me.
Twitter questions are always just gold.
KLOBUCHAR WINS THE PRIZE FOR SAYING TONIGHT'S SECRET PHRASE "LET ME BE CLEAR"
Biden asks the moderator if he's just allowed to jump in and ignore the rules. Oh Joe, to be an adult again at a table full of children...
YOU DON'T HAVE TO POINT OUT THAT YOU'RE SPEAKING EVERY TIME YOU SAY SOMETHING. @ bloomie
Completely fair question from moderator to Biden: WHY DOES RACISM EXIST? HOW CAN ONE MAN BE MORE THAN A SPECK OF DUST IN THE WIND?
Ok, handing it to Biden, he powerfully responded to that ridiculous question by invoking the fact institutional racism is still, incredibly, a thing.
Amusing audience response:
Steyer: LET'S GIVE REPARATIONS!@!!!
Black audience: oh cool, thanks. Can you drop out now?
Please tell me this thing ends at 10:00, I can't keep this up #DemDebate2020
Sanders is speaking. "LET'S TALK ABOUT MATH" is trending. Probably a coincidence.
Is Bernie eating his microphone? And why do moderators keep letting Pete get through 2 or 3 sentences before cutting him off? If you let him get that far in, you've already failed in your job, just let him talk.
That's a really weird question to pose to Bloomberg about how life expectancy in NYC increased while he was mayor. Human biology doesn't really swing back and forth based on who's in charge.
Thank God for Klobuchar. While she's talking my fingers can rest momentarily.
Moderators call out Warren for not seeming to know how many troops she would actually bring back from foreign wars.
Warren gives a completely unrelated response to the previous question.
A reminder: Biden was in the situation room with President Obama when Osama bin Laden was killed.
Definition of "irony"
Moderators wasting a good chunk of time complaining how little time they have. #DemDebate
It seems pretty clear we're now in the "kick your feet up, nothing else is happening tonight" part of the debate.
I kinda wanna hear more questions go to Bernie Sanders so I can enjoy the audience booing at him some more. Joe Biden continuing to get good audience reaction from every response.
Sanders making a pretty pathetic slam on Trump, which I don't think many in the audience picked up on because he was being incredibly sarcastic without mentioning him by name, which sounds a lot like how he just regularly talks.
Ok, let me lay out what just happened there...audience cheered loudly for saying he wanted to be in China. Sanders makes a red-meat (or whatever Dems eat) attack on Trump, effectively calling him a stupid stupid baby boy, and the audience reaction: SILENCE.
It's kind of amazing how poorly Warren's attacks on Bloomberg are landing, and how little the audience even cares. Nobody cares about Bloomberg anymore, and that means he's done. Steyer keeps trying to remind people he's there, and failing to do it. #DemDebate
What the hell is Bernie talking about the Politburoo....HOLY SHIT, THE CROWD JUST BOOED BERNIE SANDERS AND HE CHIDED **THE AUDIENCE** FOR BOOING HIM <headexplode> #DemDebate
Bernie: ALL OF YOU SHUT UP! YOU DON'T KNOW ME! SHUT UP!!
Biden's response: Eyyyyy
<crowd goes wild>
Ok, I'll admit I was wrong. This definitely got interesting again.
I am just freaking FLOORED that Bernie is having so much trouble hiding his disdain for the debate audience. #DemDebate
Biden is killing it. I can't even focus on what he's saying, I'm just enjoying the enthusiastic crowd response every time he opens his mouth. He's a rock star tonight. #DemDebate#Biden2020
Moderator asks Bernie something about being Jewish. Not touching that one, moving on.
The Israel question definitely killed the mood of the crowd. Now we're mostly rambling about how North Korea is bad. No new ground being broken. Worth contrasting though, Klob's point is Trump sucks, Biden actually gives an answer on NK and explains why Trump sucks.
Biden notices he's the only one trying to adhere to the rules and gets a supportive response from the audience. Brings up his Catholic childhood and even the moderators remark on what a gentleman he is. There's who you get as a president, a genuinely affable, respectful man.
Q: Senator Warren, how would you deal with the mass murder?
Warren: <jolts awake> uhhhhh, what?
Mod: Mass murder in Syria. What would you do?
Warren: I've got nothing.
We're in the closing section now. Did Steyer just say he has to remind himself every day TO BE HONEST??? And why A CROSS????
Klobuchar literally couldn't even answer the softball closing questions. Moderator had to remind her to actually answer the question for god's sake.
Biden once again gets massive reaction by saying he'd put a black woman on the Supreme Court (I think I heard that right)
Sanders trying to quote something profound from Mandela. I literally heard 3 people in the audience clap. He gets a standard "glad we're done with this" audience applause.
Warren gives a bible verse as her life's motto. Silence from audience. Finishes statement, and the pitch of response from the audience is identifiably female.
Buttigieg also throwing some bible stuff around to close. Gets a standard Bernie response.
Holy shit, Bloomberg made his closing remarks faster than I could even type. You can tell he's pissed, his entire close was like 2 sentences. He said the biggest misconception about him was that he was six feet tall, and I can't even #DemDebate
Final thoughts:
Biden killed it, hands down. It was incredible.
Steyer, Klobuchar, Bloomberg should drop immediately. Buttigieg now the only alt-Biden.
Sanders: MY GOD, I thought he'd take some heat tonight, but didn't think it'd be THE AUDIENCE that skewered him!! #DemDebate
Ran out of space & forgot abt Warren...swear no disrespect. Her attacks on Bloomb felt really cringey. My sense is that the attacks weren't bad, but nobody cares about Bberg anymore so like beating a dead horse. I don't expect her to drop til after ST, but she won't beat Sanders.
If this debate ACTUALLY hurts Sanders in an ideological way, some supporters might migrate to Warren, but I'd bet ppl don't leave Bernie Club easily. I assume most of Bernie's support doesn't care abt electability, and if they did, they have new reason to consider Biden.
Warren's only real chance now is Bernie suddenly leaving the race for health reasons--which I state only as political fact, not as an opinion or acceptable strategy. It doesn't get easier for Warren from here, but that's still more reason than Bberg, Klob & Stey have to stay in.
Like, people know why I think this seems weird, right? I don’t have to remind myself every morning to put on pants, because there’s zero chance I’ll leave the house without them.
Same thing with honesty. I don’t have to remind myself to be honest bc I don’t consider it a choice.
It’s such a rich-white-guy thing to remind yourself to be honest like #Steyer.
Remember kids, always do just enough good in the world to let you claim righteous indignation whenever someone questions your integrity or worldview.

OK...so now that Donald Trump has expressly refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power should he lose the election to Joe Biden (𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭), some things now need to be said very clearly.
(thread)
1 First of all, when the sitting US President (chief of the entire military) threatens to not leave office 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 should we vote him out, we're not talking abt a scathing editorial in the NY Times here.
It means people are going to die. 𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘦𝘴. 𝙐𝙨.
2 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲. I assert this truth not bc of wishful thinking, personal jealousy, nor junkie desire for another hit off the ORANGE MAN BAD pipe.
Far from being "intoxicated with liberal outrage", I have never been more sober in my life.
If you’re wearing a mask in public to avoid catching #COVID, your NOSE is more important to cover than your closed mouth if your mask doesn’t cover both.
Obviously, what you should do is get a better mask, but your nose is a hole that is always open. Your mouth has a natural shield that closes, called your lips.
I mean, it’s nice that you’re considerate enough to cover your mouth to show others you don’t want to spread it, but if you really want to avoid contracting it, cover all parts of your face that suck in air.
And now...a VP pitch you haven’t heard before!!
NM Gov Michelle Lujan Grisham would be a very capable & competent chief exec & partner to @JoeBiden. She’d reflect our ethnic/gender diversity as modern Dems & Americans. ...
Gov. Lujan Grisham has a demonstrated ability to speak to the entire political spectrum (i.e. all the way from the liberal socialist Dems to conservative anti-Trump Repubs).
She’s a trusted, catastrophe-tested, battle hardened, just plain likable leader of diverse Americans.
And most importantly, Gov. Lujan Grisham’s broad appeal, soothing charm, and political skill provides us the real chance to retain the White House & just as importantly, DEFEND THE FRAGILE SENATE MAJORITY THAT WILL ALLOW US TO REMAKE THE ENTIRE FEDERAL JUDICIARY.
I used to think of myself as a strong liberal. But reality is not like that. Now I’m something else.
[thread]
2/ That’s based on what general policy outcomes I would consider ideal if we had unlimited support and resources. In a better world I would have supported Bernie Sanders.
3/ The more time I spent on “liberal” news sites, the more I came to realize that preaching for progress was meaningless if you refused to help actually get anything done.
If outrage was your goal, progress was not.
(thread)There’s clearly a big push at the moment to properly acknowledge people of color in entertainment being passed over for white actors.
I understand the need for characters like Apu (Simpsons) to be retired or recast, as they are, at kindest, a caricature of a race...
but please let’s think about how unhelpful decisions like Kristen Bell’s are, to drop from a production like “Central Park” already a season in, because she is white, voicing a biracial character.
Cynical explanations aside, how is it helpful or inclusive to viewers to say it’s not ok for someone who is (presumably) 95%+ white to earnestly voice a character who is by design approximately 50% white? The character is not Apu. It’s a normal girl, living in New York.
