This is my first thread. Going to start sharing my impressions of the COVID-19 situation from my vantage point at San Francisco General Hospital, @UCSF, California. @SFGHFoundation #COVID19 1/12
I have witnessed an amazing hospital mobilization of every department and every aspect of operations. Truly inspiring teamwork from colleagues in infectious diseases, micro lab, ER, medicine, Peds, ObGyn, Rads, Nursing, Occ Health, EVS, materials, and countless other depts. 2/12
We continue to face inadequate COVID-19 testing capacity. This is a national crisis. But our amazing @SF_DPH lab is doing heroic nonstop work to meet the needs of our large city. 3/12
Many commercial testing labs are now online offering tests. @UCSF has also developed in-house testing. We’re creating workflows right now to access these local tests as fast as possible. 4/12
We are seeing community-level transmission. @SF_DPH doing tireless herculean work on contact tracing and fielding countless inquiries from us at the hospital and from the general public. 5/12
Our hospital processes have undergone extensive preparation at all levels. Adult and pediatric wards, ICUs, L&D, ER, and outpatient clinics have done a huge amount of work to get ready. Processes going well as we’ve worked up many patients, and cared for our first patients. 6/12
Across @UCSF, our infectious diseases groups (@UCSF_HIVIDGM, @UCSF_ID, SFVA) are learning a lot about COVID-19 clinical presentations. 7/12
Grateful to my amazing SFGH and UCSF colleagues @dhavlir, @annieluet, @carina_marquez, @AyeshaAppaMD, @lilbrownmd, @lard58, @SDoernberg, @jen_babik, @PCH_SF, @BSchwartzinSF, @AllisonRBond, and many more... 8/12
At SF General Hospital, we’ve created and operationalized a quick low radiation dose chest CT that takes very little time, and has been very useful in helping us evaluate and risk stratify patients. 9/12
We’re also leaning heavily on rapid diagnostics like the @BiofireDX respiratory pathogen panel and @CepheidNews FluA/FluB/RSV panel to help clinch alternative diagnoses. 10/12
We at hospitals are here for you. We’re doing everything we can to be ready. But we need the public’s help to hand wash, social distance, work from home if your employers have advised/allowed it, and avoid large crowds. This will help blunt the impact on hospitals. 11/12
We’re all in this together. Our energy level and determination is very high. We will meet this challenge with everything we’ve got. We will persist, and will outlast this. #LetsGo 12/12

A truly momentous day at San Francisco General Hospital @ZSFGCare @UCSF @SFGHFoundation: for the first time since March 5, 2020, we have zero patients with #COVID19 in our hospital. A huge milestone in our battle against this pandemic.
We have been at a decreasing level of COVID-19 patients at the hospital for many weeks. And no doubt, we will continue to admit and care for more patients with COVID-19 in the weeks and months ahead.
But today, wanted to celebrate the care that’s been delivered at SF General @ZSFGCare @SFGHFoundation, mourn the patients we have lost, and give our best wishes for strength and healing to all patients still recovering.

Thanks for all your interest and I am incredibly grateful for your messages of support for our team! We’ve been hard at work, it’s been tough to tweet, but here’s some 3/29/20 #COVID19 updates from frontline at SF General Hospital @SFGHFoundation @UCSF
The last 7-10 days have been incredibly busy-we are working our absolute hardest to deliver the best care we can and continue getting ready for whatever is to come the next several weeks.
Patient numbers are rising, like at most places. I continue to be amazed and proud of all my colleagues for the teamwork, determination, and resolve to meet the moment and rise up to this challenge.
