A truly momentous day at San Francisco General Hospital @ZSFGCare @UCSF @SFGHFoundation: for the first time since March 5, 2020, we have zero patients with #COVID19 in our hospital. A huge milestone in our battle against this pandemic.
We have been at a decreasing level of COVID-19 patients at the hospital for many weeks. And no doubt, we will continue to admit and care for more patients with COVID-19 in the weeks and months ahead.
But today, wanted to celebrate the care that’s been delivered at SF General @ZSFGCare @SFGHFoundation, mourn the patients we have lost, and give our best wishes for strength and healing to all patients still recovering.
Every day since 3/5/2020, we’ve had a hospital meeting where we've reviewed every patient with COVID-19 with their clinicians and a large multidisciplinary group of dedicated experts.
This team-based system of care has worked well and has allowed us to adapt to many changing phases of how we’ve delivered clinical care for COVID-19.
Our one-by-one real-time review of each patient has allowed us to offer quick help to clinical teams to ensure the right type of COVID-19 precautions for every patient, advise on testing and diagnostics, coordinate therapeutics, and enable surgeries/procedures to occur safely.
I want to deeply thank my colleagues Dr. Lisa Winston and Elaine Dekker in Infection Control for their partnership in running this system, Drs. John Szumowski @jdszumowski, Emma Bainbridge, and Luis Rubio @lardidmd for being on this call day in and day out.
I also want to deeply thank the amazing Dr. Annie Luetkemeyer @annieluet who has led our clinical therapeutics efforts, including directing many clinical trials that have given treatment access to our patients, a population base historically underrepresented in clinical trials.
We’ve also been able to collaborate with our outstanding incredible hospital medicine and pulmonary critical care colleagues led by Drs. Sumant Ranji @sumantranji, Kelly Han, David Chia, Antonio Gomez, and Carolyn Hendrickson. @Bob_Wachter
Their divisions, their incredible faculty, clinicians, nurses, and staff have cared for the majority of our COVID-19 patients, reviewing patients’ clinical statuses and COVID-19 therapeutics every step of the way.
Our daily meeting has also included surgery colleagues led by Dr. Lucy Kornblith @LucyKornblith, who has helped guide the care of our complex trauma and other surgical patients. Dr. Kornblith has also led our clinical trial efforts on anticoagulation therapies.
Gratitude also to our incredible radiology colleagues Drs. Brian Haas and Khai Vu who've joined us daily and analyzed countless Xrays and CTs on every patient. You've been incredible teammates.
And grateful for our collaborations with Pediatrics, Family Medicine, OBGYN, Cardiology, and Psychiatry, who have also cared for so many patients.
@ZSFGCare is also fortunate to have incredible nursing leadership including Tanvi Bhakta and Christina Bloom and colleagues whose groups provided heroic unrelenting care to so many, and also helped us navigate patients’ complex needs, home situations, and roadmaps to recovery.
We’ve also had incredible partnership at SF General with the amazing heroes working in the communities we serve. Your direct, unceasing, heroic work in the homes, neighborhoods, business establishments, and communities, and the fierce advocacy you have done...
...have been a deep source of inspiration and directly responsible for mitigating the pandemic. @DHavlir @Carina_Marquez @Jon_Jacobo @LatinoTask @KBibbinsDomingo @AliciaFMD @MarleneMartinMD @kfrhoads @MonicaGandhi9 and so many others! missionlocal.org/2021/03/the-co…
And we’ve been lucky to collaborate with @SF_DPH @GColfax @LondonBreed who have stood up excellent care systems including our city’s isolation and quarantine and shelter in place systems...
...that enabled so many vulnerable patients to transition out of hospital. @hkanzaria @JFinSF.
Main reflection today is *gratitude* to be able to work at an incredible hospital like SF General @ZSFGCare @SFGHFoundation and @UCSF with dedicated colleagues who have kept up the energy and perseverance throughout, never stopping, never tiring.
Two quick thoughts for the long road ahead. (1) SF’s vaccination campaign is going outstandingly-but there is more work to do to enable everyone to get vaccinated. Let’s keep the drive going, and help everyone get the information and access they need. sf.gov/get-vaccinated…
SF just celebrated the one millionth dose of vaccine given in our city-an incredible achievement!
(2) We have a lot of recovery work to do this year, especially for our vulnerable communities who have been so disproportionately and severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We need to dedicate ourselves to helping all patients reconnect to care for non-COVID medical needs.
Concerning data abounds showing care that’s falling behind including delayed cancer, cardiovascular and other diagnoses. Our med center has been and is extremely safe-we want all patients to come in for anything they need: we’re here for you and we want to connect with you.
Let’s keep supporting each other across the Bay Area and dedicate ourselves to recovery from COVID-19. The road ahead of us is long- let’s tackle it with the same energy we have been tackling the pandemic. #LetsGo

Thanks for all your interest and I am incredibly grateful for your messages of support for our team! We’ve been hard at work, it’s been tough to tweet, but here’s some 3/29/20 #COVID19 updates from frontline at SF General Hospital @SFGHFoundation @UCSF
The last 7-10 days have been incredibly busy-we are working our absolute hardest to deliver the best care we can and continue getting ready for whatever is to come the next several weeks.
Patient numbers are rising, like at most places. I continue to be amazed and proud of all my colleagues for the teamwork, determination, and resolve to meet the moment and rise up to this challenge.
