Ok, #CatholicTwitter, come through with your best streaming options for Mass. Obvs, EWTN is the default, but I’d love to be able to mix it up since we’ll be on #CoronaVirus hiatus for a while. Please & thank you! 🙏🏾
We Should All Be More Like the Nuns of 1918: The archbishop of Philadelphia called on nuns in his diocese to leave their convents & take up posts caring for the sick & dying across the city. 2000 answered the call. nytimes.com/2020/03/20/opi…
When your pastor invites you to test run an interactive liturgy done in conjunction with some folks from your home diocese...Pretty sure this is how you church online, you know, if it works.
Our parish is putting up prayers on F’book & Insta stories for times when bells are ringing: facebook.com/sbaparish We’re working on having a Zoom liturgy ready for next week at our regular Mass time, 9:30a CST. Check there or our website for more info: benedicttheafrican.org
Thanks for compiling this! Will add our parish's Zoom Mass for the broader internet audience after we've done it without too much embarrassment for the first time Sunday. =)
Shout out to @juliafspa for hosting a spiritual meet up this morn! Came away w/this awesome quote from St. Augustine: Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see that they do not remain as they are.
I think it's cool for as long as I've been working from home, I've been able to have weekly lunch dates with the Pope. Happening now: Hope he keeps this up. Glad we've got a shepherd in the Chair.
That was way more moving than I expected, tbh. *wipes tears* Pope Francis did that. Can’t wait to go back & reread. #UrbietOrbi
Pretend home Mass is going great until the much later than usual online one gets started.
We had our parish’s first online Mass via Zoom yesterday, so lector’s could participate remotely, folks could participate. I underestimated how hungry folks would be just to chat with church fam. Anyway, here’s the sermon if you missed out: benedicttheafrican.org/adult-faith-fo…
Forgot to share this last week: Georgetown steps up for service workers displaced by COVID-19. catholiclabor.org/2020/03/george… There's an email if you want to reach out to #Catholic universities in your area. #1u
Glad to join this convo & meet some of the weal folks outside of Chicago!
Coronavirus has cancelled public Masses. How can we participate in our own homes? americamagazine.org/faith/2020/03/… I’m glad our parish opted for Zoom, interested to see what kind of things are incorporated into the Holy Week festivities.
Uhhh, turned it on Univision this morn & they’re broadcasting Domingo de Ramos del Vaticano. Why were there so many people around Papa Francisco?!? They couldn’t have a few less alter servers? I hope they’re doing temp checks for anyone helping out...
Was talking to my suegra, who is from rural México, today. Didn’t realize that she didn’t go to Mass regularly until she was in her 20s. Before that, a priest only came to the village 3-4 times a year. And they didn’t really do anything in the meantime. She doesn’t ever miss now.
(Con’t) Made me grateful for Vatican II + technology, & the many ways that folks are engaging in their faith communities. Our Zoom Mass this morn featured a ton of readers, lots of participation, folks from all over & a priest encouraging folks to take ownership. We’re fortunate.
The Pope & the Plague: commonwealmagazine.org/pope-plague A long reflection on the urbi et orbi. Still struck by it even in reading this piece, it feels like something I won’t forget, even if this stretches out for much longer.
An interview with the Pope on COVID just posted: commonwealmagazine.org/time-great-unc… I especially appreciated his response on the impact on the Church + his message for young people, “Have the courage to look ahead, & to be prophetic.” Took me back to the charge from “Christus Vivit,”
I’ve mentioned before that it’s stuck out to me how the Mayor has thrown religion into her speeches previously. She’s joining Cardinal Cupich in an ecumenical stations of the cross according to an email that went out.
Our pastor surprised us today & laid out Easter hosts for all of us once we return. Very moving moment. Only, we had 108 folks join this morning via Zoom, so we might need more. I love that Fr. Jones is really embracing how to bridge the physical distance in creative ways.
Las Cruces, NM bishop first in US to resume public Masses amid pandemic: catholicnewsagency.com/news/las-cruce… Welp, so it begins, I suspect others will follow now...
Proclaiming resurrection at the foot of the Cross – in a time of global pandemic: paxchristiusa.org/2020/04/18/pro… I love reading Scott’s reflections, thanks for hosting him, @PaxChristiUSA!
This is a good piece on how some priests across the world have really stepped up to meet the needs of the COVID crisis: cruxnow.com/church-in-the-… Also, I’m a straight up fan of +Krajewski, truly a man on a mission. From a mini-🧵 on him:
Good on the home state bishops for not reopening Catholic churches despite Kemp's plans: georgiabulletin.org/news/2020/04/g… h/t @MikeOLoughlin. Selfishly, as soon as churches reopen, my dad will have to be all over ArchATL & I want that man healthy.
Whoa: Franciscan University to pay tuition costs for new students in the fall. cruxnow.com/church-in-the-… Wonder if this gets whatever their competition is to answer in kind...
Sr. Joanne, one of the @springfieldop’s at our parish, runs our Bible study + adult faith group. As one part of our daily online offerings, she’s moved it to Zoom. Here’s ~20 mins of her breaking open this week’s Gospel:
Ft. some art from our church!
I've been moderating our parish's Mass on Zoom, & every time someone "raises their hand," I'm rushing to see what the concern is, but now I'm realizing that this is just how Black folks are expressing their "Amen hand" in an online age.
'God makes a way': Black parishes respond to COVID-19. ncronline.org/news/parish/go… Talked to my pastor, in some ways we were prepared b/c after merger he’d been saying church isn’t building + encouraging all to engage. 80% are connected & we have daily offerings, more than pre-virus.
Georgetown has had some good online programming during this time. This event for next week looks interesting: The Papacy Confronts Coronavirus berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/events/the-pap…
Catholic masses to resume in Chicago with 10-person limit? Archdiocese says yes. chicago.suntimes.com/politics/2020/… Welp, you can get a baptism in. Look forward to see how they're going to implement this for Masses...
Meanwhile, a TX diocese it waiting to figure out implementation on the front end.
Few Americans say their house of worship is open, but a quarter say their faith has grown amid pandemic. Folks from Black Protestant churches & those who describe themselves as very religious are particularly likely to say their faith has strengthened: pewrsr.ch/3eZZw8V
Cardinal Sarah has extremely strong opinions, ver. n: cruxnow.com/covid-19/2020/… Looks down at the entire Church in Germany, says priests shouldn’t be looking at the camera (ie, the congregation) but God & more!
The U.S. bishops' conference has forwarded a set of recommendations to Catholic prelates across the country, proposing various paths forward for how they might restart the public celebration of the Mass: groups of 10, sanitizer during Communion. ncronline.org/news/parish/us…
Chicago's Archdiocese has more details on their re-open implementation: archchicago.org/coronavirus/re… I did LOL at "We expect this situation to continue for some weeks..." like, sweetie, we're in Region 1, it's gonna be longer than that. Glad to see a little more meat on the bones tho.
From behind the camera lens, bishops adapt to ‘virtual’ dioceses: cruxnow.com/church-in-the-… Missed this 2 days ago. Would love a broad survey on how widespread the online offerings are, if there’s noticeable community gaps, who’s doing more programming + what type/targeting whom.
Many folk I know will be waiting a while longer to head back to Mass. A story like this makes it seem prudent: Houston Arch. reopened ahead of other TX dioceses. A priest got pneumonia then died. Now five others have COVID-19 & the church is closing again: houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…
Minnesota bishops will reopen public Masses, defy state order: catholicnewsagency.com/news/minnesota… They’re unhappy religious services are limited to 10, without a timeline to gradually increase.
Justice Dept. challenged California's plan, which seems to look similar to Minnesota's, so guessing we can expect more letters to this effect: cruxnow.com/church-in-the-… “unequal treatment of faith communities” & "no pandemic exception to the US Constitution & its Bill of Rights"
Check out this pledge from @PaxChristiUSA that recognizes our interconnectedness + inequalities that COVID is bearing out: mypledgetoprotect.org The type of Catholic responses you love to see.
If your church is all about a bldg, you’re thinking too small. If your place of worship hasn’t figured out how to reach their flock, maybe step up & help them do so. If faith is lmtd to what happens in the confines of a bldg, you’re prob living it wrong.
Asked if he thinks Communion can be distributed safely, Dr. Fauci said “no,” especially in areas still getting the virus under control. americamagazine.org/faith/2020/05/…
On the memory of Pope Francis’ Urbi et Orbi blessing in March: “No director could have invented such a powerful scene.” cruxnow.com/news-analysis/… Dunno what it says about me, but I don’t remember watching any of the other unforgettable moments...
We tried Mass on Facebook Live today, and besides one fluke where the pastor got muted during part of the homily 🤦🏾♀️, it was both a good homily + a couple of amazing songs. You can watch here if you’re inclined: facebook.com/SBAParish/vide…#Catholic#CatholicTwitter
650+ corona cases have been linked to nearly 40 churches & religious events across the US since the beginning of the pandemic, w/many erupting over the last month as Americans resumed their pre-pandemic activities: nytimes.com/2020/07/08/us/… We’ll be online for foreseeable future.
If you want to join our parish for “Hush Harbor,” a presentation of speeches & spirituals from the past, it’s live now: facebook.com/SBAParish/vide… It feels right given the losses from the Civil Rights Movement yesterday. We pride ourselves in all kinds of beautiful at SBA. 😉
Hope has been very much on my mind throughout the pandemic. Nice to read this reflection from @fatherkirby the day our bit of hope entered the world. Facing the choice between false & holistic hope: cruxnow.com/commentary/202…
They defied health rules for a storybook San Francisco wedding. The virus didn't spare them. sfchronicle.com/bayarea/articl… The Archdiocese statement is really lacking given the lengths to which the parish went to circumvent rules put in place to protect folks’ lives...
Write up on the Church After 2020 event I plugged last week: cruxnow.com/church-in-the-… It really is worth going back & listening to. Link upthread.
Our parish does something daily on Zoom @ noon. Tuesdays we have Bible Study where we look at the readings for Sunday’s Mass. Here, Sr. Joanne breaks open today’s readings: Let me know if you’re interested in joining us & I’ll DM you info. #CatholicTwitter
On pandemic Saturdays our parish does “Hush Harbor,” reminiscent of how enslaved folks gathered. It looks different every week depending on who is taking the lead. Today a DJ is spinning gospel from the Civil Rights Era. Check it out here: facebook.com/SBAParish/vide…
Catholic Schools Open In The Chicago Area Amid Teacher Concerns About COVID-19: The 70k students & school employees will be largest experiment with in-person learning in the area. wbez.org/stories/cathol… An experiment + no union & it’s benefits (like speaking OTR) = rough life.
ArchChicago school parents are being asked to sign waivers before their kids come back to school stating they understand risks + won’t sue: nbcchi.com/SMyz141
ArchChicago teachers aren’t unionized, but apparently 100s of them have linked up with @AriseChicago & are demanding that Catholic schools have no in-person classes this fall + that teachers are consulted before a new reopening plan is crafted. chicago.suntimes.com/2020/8/20/2137…
Wow. DC man designs LEGO model of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. cruxnow.com/church-in-the-… He’s taken this next level. Who even knew there was LEGO architectural design software.
Once again, a very visible pro-life voice is extremely flippant about life after birth. 🤦🏾♀️ It’s absolutely shameful how many folks have died from coronavirus, the almost 200k deaths shouldn’t be waved away. Disgusting.
On Saturdays since shutdown our parish does Hush Harbor, with spirituals & speeches from the past that resonate today. Today’s theme for the speeches seems to be voting & the music is SO on point. Check it out here: facebook.com/SBAParish/vide…
36% of young Catholics say they will attend Mass less often after pandemic. americamagazine.org/faith/2020/09/… The respondents saying that they plan to attend Mass less often in the future cut across all categories of prior attendance.
Archdiocesan officials said Wednesday that there have been 16 confirmed cases among Catholic students & staff in the past seven days. They would not say how many confirmed infections there have been since the first schools opened about a month ago. 🤔 chicago.suntimes.com/education/2020…

Another 5-3 election case decided. This one features Kavanaugh vs. Kagan, in which he agues ballots postmarked by E-Day risk flipping the results, as opposed to, you know, just being a part of the count. electionlawblog.org/?p=117435 These folks...
Not only was Kavanaugh’s decision enraging, his work was sloppy. 1. About Vermont:
The alert that broke my phone. America was already going to be fixing this dude’s mess for years. The courts are forever changed by him. But another SCOTUS seat, Lord, have mercy.
Y’all don’t have to guess, Mitch already said if he had the chance he’d fill the vacancy this year. cnn.com/2019/05/28/pol… He cares not about consistency.
I’d avoided news of Daniel Prude’s death because I wasn’t ready. Today I listened to The Daily on it. It’s as rough as anticipated. nytimes.com/2020/09/08/pod… Anyways, I listened to this version of “Strange Fruit” halfway through because my heart was heavy. npr.org/2020/06/12/875…
So we’re clear, no one in the Rochester Police command staff was asked for their resignation. The chief & two others are retiring in protest. Two others are going back to a lower rank. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/r… The Mayor has stood by the chief’s actions the entire time.
Missed this yest: Rochester mayor relieves police chief ahead of his retirement, cites city review of Prude case. nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/ro… She also suspended the city attorney & her own communications director for 30 days without pay.
I slept when the baby did, so late to the shock. It’s only appropriate I learned from a text from Christian. When they say you never know what people are going through, this man right here. He made the most of his public facing time, & half of it while battling cancer. Just, wow.
I’m praying tonight b/c it feels the only thing I’m capable of. Police shootings are like mass shootings: very American, very upsetting, very unlikely that yet another incident will tip the scales into necessary policy changes. And Jacob Blake’s children witnessed that violence.
‘The rifle was being jerked around in all directions while it was being fired.’ Gunman kills two, wounds another during another night of unrest in Kenosha: chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/…
The appraisal of how little Black life is worth begins at birth, and never ends: miamiherald.com/opinion/opn-co… I hadn’t seen that newborn study, geez. The end gutted me.
