Los superdepredadores, que en ecología son aquellos depredadores que no tienen depredadores naturales, ayudan a mitigar los efectos de depredadores no nativos.
Un estudio ha analizado los efectos de la enfermedad que ha diezmado algunas poblaciones del diablo de Tasmania, para evaluar el papel de este depredador sobre depredadores introducidos como los gatos.
Sus resultados parecen claros, ahí donde las poblaciones del diablo de Tasmania se han reducido, han aumentado las de gatos silvestres, y afectado a las poblaciones de presas de ambos depredadores.
El estudio demuestra como una enfermedad, como la que afecta a la del diablo de Tasmania, puede dar lugar a un cambio en el total de la comunidad.
