It's not like the ICU mortality of intubated patients is good. In fact, it is terrible. There is no argument that #COVID19 behaves differently than other causes of respiratory failure.
Another thought. It's just a thought. Don't cancel me. What if the reason healthcare workers seem to fair so poorly is that we are more likely to be intubated earlier? B/c of ingrained action bias and the bias of wanting to give colleagues the "extra protection" of intubation.
I put this thread out on March 24, not because I am a wizard, but because frontline colleagues were afraid to speak publicly--like @cameronks This does not mean I think ventilators or ICUs are not necessary.
What we need IMHO is a hell of a lot more people in our profession like @cameronks -- Maybe just maybe when we the history of this crisis is written we will see the wisdom of not shutting down thoughtful but contrarian views.
