I want to address the issue of total #COVID19 deaths vs deaths per capita. Usually death per capita is better for most diseases, especially chronic like heart disease. But ask yourself - what is more dangerous - 100 cases in Manhattan or 100 in Montana? ➡️dangerous in New York:🧵
2) So first, yes, usually same number of cases in smaller pop like Montana means higher rate. But same 100 #COVID19 cases in NYC also means the great propensity of transmission to others due to density and proximity, unlike chronic diseases; harder to distance. This is 1 reason.
3) Related to density- potential for epidemic wildfire to spread is also much greater in a larger population (more susceptible), and in a more internationally place. Though Italy also gets lots of tourism. But Italy can more easily shut its borders while US cannot between states.
4) Leaky ship - related to US interior border issues, many parts of US still doesn’t have lockdown (cough, Kansas, cough KS state leg overruled governor), or have lots of exemptions, and lots interstate travel. This means even if US has some lockdowns, it is a very 🦠 leaky ship.
5) Thus unlike a EU country that that completely close its borders, US states cannot easily close off interstate travel. A leaky ship that just plugs 40 out of 50 holes will still keep flooding and sinking. Thus 100 cases in NYC can still flood much bigger ship: the US. #COVID19
